Mail Figures

Post by The Goats Toe »

Does anyone know the agreed figures between CWU and Royal Mail for the amount of letters in a tray for manual sorting? Also flats in a tray for manual? Parcels in a Wendy ? Bulk parcels in a yorke?

I've heard different figures muted for different offices.

there is no agreed figures, each mail centre produces its own acf (average count) for each type whether it be flats or letters and it varies up and down the country

why do you need the figure? as its pretty irrelevant from a postie point of view

I don't think its irrelevant for posties as they are developing daily work plans based on mail counts :cuppa

There is no agreed national sorting rate apart from the 1 min prep test. Until there is those work plans mean nothing to us posties

They don't weigh them any more, as that was proved to be wrong.
They are now counted by a machine, which is calibrated every couple of months. The method of calibration (I believe) several trays are manually counted and then put through the machine and hope they match :pray

Doubtfull, you can never guarantee that the machine won't grab two thin letters at the same time

That will be why it's called an average CF rather than exact CF counting by machine is far far more reliable and accurate than weight

I'd be interested to know if there is an accepted figure for the number of letters per tray. We've been told that we should be able to prep a full tray of mechanised letters in 8 minutes - the union rep confirmed this, but he nods his head to anything.
We've also been told that there's an accepted prep rate for flats too - can't quite remember what that figure is, but think a rate of 40 items per minute was mentioned.

We were told that a tray of manual letters contained 175 letters, tray of flats was 38, Wendy of parcels was 184 and yorke of bulk parcels was 20. Now these figures seem strange to us as in they seem low and therefore affects our indoor sorting figures and in turn our prep and get out times. We have counted contents of trays ourselves and our figures are higher than the DOM's. that's why I was/am looking to see if there is an agreed figure between RM and CWU on this, do all delivery offices use the above figures?
