were a number of staff down and been told they not allowed to employ more staff, but we got lads doing 2 duites on over time everyday for the last month or so, so they pay more on overtime than they would employing people, dont make sense,

They will eventually be doing more managerial work so RM can cut down on managers

OT is cheaper even if it's over 39 hours and attracts RM's 'premium' OT rate, which is a fraction of the 1.5 or 2x pay you'd receive in other industries. Remember it's cheaper for RM to have 2 OPG's doing 39hrs+19.5 OT than 3 OPG's working a flat 39. This is due to the NI/Employee tax system in the UK. This is why RM's OT rate is so low, as flexibility in tune with varying workload is necessary for the company to function at a profit. Both RM and the CWU acknowledge that.

Obviously if we were a different sector with value added like manufacturing the OT rates would be far higher therefore 3 employees in my example above would be far cheaper than 2 doing 19.5 hours OT.

It's not perfect, but there's no other practical way for RM to manage fluid workloads and varying attendance levels. It's evolved naturally over the years as is about as good as it gets. OT fills in the gaps, and as long as it's fairly offered to all volunteers and not favourites then I can't see anyone upsetting the status quo.

The problem i have with offices running on overtime is the service we give the customers, 5,6,7pm deliveries on a semi-regular basis because people are taking on multiple walks isn't good for our reputation.

We've recently had a cap put on our Overtime. No pressure Mon or Tues, only 30mins a day for the rest of the week. We're only a single Postie understrength and most have had all their holidays so it's not too bad. Although there's a cap on "Pressure" Overtime they still pay for "The Chosen Few" to open up and do early IPS and Double prepping.

Can produce the stupid situation that Posties can be paid "Early Overtime", go out on Delivery , Get back an hour early and still end up getting paid that Early Overtime. On a Monday there's actually NO MAIL in the office when these idiots turn up, so they fill their time putting in Households (normally only for their mates though). On a Tuesday it's a similar situation as there's only a small amount of mail in early. And Management is looking for ways to work more efficiently! FFS

I guess the rounds are the easy ones which for 2 rounds means they are really getting 8 hours delivery pay for 6 hours work max. In our DO the difference between some rounds in delivery times is truly astounding (nothing to do with the speed of work either), and the experienced guys know exactly which ones to pick.

They sometimes get the easier walks but will take whatever is going, the big difference is they will usually get a van for the overtime where the walks would be HCT duty
