Daughter needs Operation tomorrow - Paid leave??

Post by 19times »

Hi,

My Daughter was injured at Home today and she has been told she requires an operation to repair the damage which will take place in the Morning.

I have been at the hospital today since 7pm

Please could anyone tell me If I can take one day's PAID leave?? I keep reading allsorts of stories saying yes/no/up to Manager etc.

I tried ringing the office but it's shut being a Sunday.

It is an emergency situation.

Thanks.

Up to your managers discretion I'm afraid, if he/she has a heart they will give you a days paid leave. If you know of anybody else who has had similar circumstances and been paid then you have a case if he turns down your request as we all have to be treated equally in the workplace.

Urgent domestic: An employee may have an emergency at home, for example, their house has been flooded. Consider the
circumstances, and where necessary, offer a day off with full pay (up to three days depending on circumstances, with
additional days covered by holiday or unpaid leave). Use your discretion – think about what is reasonable to deal with the issue
Family emergencies: A family emergency is when time off is required to deal with something more urgent/
serious, for example, a dependant gives birth, is injured or dies. We usually offer a paid day off (up to three
days depending on circumstances - use your discretion), with further days unpaid/covered by holiday
The 1st day should at least be special leave with pay,the rest, you know what they are like.

I had a situation like this where my son got took into hospital with breathing difficulties, I stayed at the hospital until he was discharged later that night, the manager said they were classing it as a child care issues because we have other kids and the mrs had to stop at home to look after them and this did not class as special leave with pay. I told him I wanted speacial leave with pay and quoted "Urgent Domestic Distress" and told him that if I didn't get it I would be putting a grievance because i felt that i was entitled to special leave with pay. I got the day with full pay.

Thanks all for the replies. Daughter is home now and recovering well so will return to work tomorrow.

I shall definitely question the decision If I don't get at least the first day payed.

Small update on this.

Spoke to Dom today who was quite understanding and I asked what has it been classed as quoting family emergency etc just said I'll have to check with Dom support, I went and asked him and he told me Manager (young pup) told us to put it down as Sick leave  and in the same breath nah put Special leave without pay down

I then proceeded to mention my chat with the Dom and he then changed it to special leave with pay until the Dom tells him otherwise.

I am not counting my chickens however in my opinion that is correct in my situation but I still half expect it to not go my way. :cry
