Not entitled to have a saturday off?!!

Im a leave reserve and I currently work 5 days to cover holidays or to do a variety of duties in a week which is my role. I havent had a saturday off in 6 months and I brought this up with the manager who told me reserves are not entitled to saturdays as I dont have my own duty. I find that wrong and feel shafted as im sure im entitled like anyone else in that office to have a saturday off (1 in 4 or 1 in 6). The only days I ever get off is the quiet day we have and im sure the manager can work the rota around so he can give me a saturday once every few weeks but he doesnt seem to be willing to adapt. Its ok when they want overtime from us and I even helped him out by coming in one thursday when i was on my annual leave because he was so desperate and short staffed due to sickness!!!
Im not sure what the entitlement for reserves to have odd saturdays off and even if he isnt obliged to do so I would have thought it would have been curtious just to work rotas around. I feel like I dont wanna give them anything again and stand my ground never to work a minute over my duty again or basically do anything for them!!!

unit to unit, both parties believe we can deliver cost effective and reliable options that will
maximise the number of Saturdays off for those who wish them. Royal Mail and CWU
commit to achieving at least 1 in 4 Saturdays off for the majority of employees (including
reserves) during the roll out of the operational transformation programme. In some
circumstances this may be exceeded utilising jointly identified options to provide 1 Saturday
off in 2 or 3.
Progress on all the issues/objectives above will be jointly monitored and reviewed at
national level on an ongoing basis.

It is an aspiration!!! And as for monitoring on a national level basis - yeah right!

My Saturdays off are about 1 in 4, 1 in every 4 months. Think the LM's are getting confused to what 1 in 4 means.

Get a seniority list of the reserves.
Go down the list so the reserves get the pick of what duties are available for the next week.
They should then in the interest of fairness...
Have the day off of the duty they are covering,if it's 'Bobs' duty and it's a Sat off then they have that.If 'Bob' was on it he would have that day off wouldn't he!
Get some kind of aggregate list,that way you can keep an eye on who's had Sat's off,if some,even if they are low on seniority in the list have not had a Sat off for a while then they get priority.

The minimum is what ever duty structure your office voted for in its revision. If they voted for 1 in 4 it's that if it was1 in 6 it's that, it's whatever the office decided it wanted to go with on the revision

the way i see things is that we keep our side of the way forward and dont strike because we signed the agreement . but our union do not enforce our side you cant say that they do not know whats going on if we could strike things would soon get done

The use of the word 'aspiration' is a fudge - it means nothing to people that are not even getting what should be a minimum of 1 in 6.

The Union could have gone a minimum (average of 1 in 6) not put more weight behind those already get the minimum of 1 in 6. The aspiration was to make things better but not necessarily for all. The fact that they have to include 'Reserves' in bracket instead of simply saying all postmen goes to show...

'Aspiration for those that want it'... blah blah blah. The reality is very different - it cannot be done. Sorry, Postman; it will just not happen - managers will not invest too much of their time monitoring these things (it is not easy anyway; with shortage of staff and operational needs).

This is why we pay subs to the Union to fight for all of us - for equal opportunities

Monitoring can only be done by the Union - the managers cannot be trusted and fellow members also cannot be relied upon to fight for equal opportunities and/or support the weakest in the office/system.

This is now meaningless. They took away ours having run staffing levels to a minimum to make it look like it could no longer be achieved. All the CWU area rep would say was that all the upper management that agreed to this plan had gone and things had to change?!

The new 'working relationship' between management and the union is basically Management say jump and the union say how high!

Would not be surprised if they made Sundays part of all our working week soon too after all who's going to stop them?

I am all for fairness Postman and believe reserves should be entitled to Saturdays off just as much as duty holders. I just think your strong belief in the 2010 agreement is wasted. In RM now the agreements are only agreements until the management decide to ignore them!
