My DOM has asked me if i would be willing to take over my DO's fleet management ( replacing a daily 2hour delivery i've been doing) as part of my normal RLE duty.
I can't find any information or guidance on responsibilities and procedures for this (have already posted in Blue Shirts), but am also wondering if i should even be asked to undertake this responsibility?
I know a good bit of what is required ie drivers hours records and the like. But i also know that the 6 monthly logbook checks are usually carried out by a manager as are drivers licence checks etc.
As far as i've been told my DOM would continue with licence checks but pretty much everything else would be down to me.
The daily key control sheets and logbooks haven't been filled in properly for months and i know there's an audit due in our DO on 1/4/15, so my DOM wants me to concentrate on getting the drivers hours and log books up to date before this audit. Obviously there is going to be a large element of guess work with regard just these elements.
So really what i'm asking is should i be asked to sort things out for the audit (really down to poor management that it's in the state it's in) and should i be asked to take over the responsibility for the fleet management/ control?

Don't do it,you will get everything up to date and get management out of the s**t,then in time you'll be back on your walk.
I'd leave well alone personally.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

No we don't have anything larger than a transit and no tachographs.
Whilst i know where your coming from Postman, there are reasons i'm considering it.
The RLE is nothing like it should be in my DO now since the revision.
Security has gone out the window - my office door is propped open from just before i arrive each morning till after i've gone home. Staff are free to walk in and out, collect van keys, pda's, fuel cards and Special's after allocation - whenever they want.
The main reason for that was when our DOM decided all items that were P739 should be retunred to the callers office. Before it had always been that all SD's, tracked and Rd's had to come back into the RLE along with your van keys and PDA - i would then sign them all off / back in etc.
The new system of returning all items to the callers was introduced as i am usually out on delivery when staff are getting back and going home. As i wouldn't have the time to get back to the office and scan all items back in, this was the solution apparently. So i maintain no security in the RLE as a direct consequence - my stand being that if i can't be held responsible for items returned then i shouldn't be held responsible for items at all. Saturday's are a prime example - if staff are allowed to enter the RLE to return their keys and pda's whilst there are Sd items on retention and nobody about - then i will not be responsible.
I fully appreciate the implications of such a stance but there it is - 15 months later here we are - so our DOM has decided to give me fleet and take away the delivery.
Fine i don't really care, but if you want me to do it, then i will do it properly or not at all - and that will include restoring the security of the RLE.
The alternative is likely to be that i recieve and allocate SD's and then go out on delivery and that is my duty - nothing else :-)
