Possible changes to postal delivery hours in Manchester area

Strong rumours coming out of Manchester Mail Centre of a reduction or cancellation of night shift staff. The result of which would be Postman in the region going from a 6-2 working day to an 8-4 pattern. As you can imagine this has not gone down too well with our office. This is worrying as I think it fits in with Royal Mails general plans of later hours working on delivery with the juicy added bonus of forcing full timers out of the door, many of which would see this as a final straw in the erosion of their terms and conditions.
Has anybody got any info on this? Naturally these rumours sometimes come down as a way of testing the water. It must only be a matter of time before they try rolling this rubbish out nationally.
who fancies picking their kids up an hour after the school shuts!!!!! Or finishing work at Four on a Saturday thus killing the weekend completely...

That makes for depressing reading Blue Terrier. hope that never sees the light of day in delivery.
I completely agree with you on the need for the Union to look into the fatigue levels that are killing people in delivery. Going from a 2 hour delivery to the best part of 5 hours is one hell of a shift over not that many years. Even the younger lads in our unit are struggling with this, we all know that when you sit down when you get home for five minutes, then stand up, the net result is shuffling around like an old man. All we hear in work time learning propaganda meetings is ." We care about your health and wellbeing! " Then when you reach breaking point after 6 day 5 hour walks as many are doing in delivery ( 5 lads in two years in our office) you get offered a years pay retirement on sick health and ...... " shut the door on your way out"... er what about the health and well-being you go on about, ahh that now applys to the part time worker who has now taken your place, until his knees/ back / hip/ give way in ten years then rinse and repeat.

Already on 8am - 4pm, have been for about 4 years now

But, I think this is because we are a SPDO

Edit, it is an earlier finish on Tues and Saturday, the supposedly light days

Our delivery office :
(1) Four days delivery 4 am
(2) 6 days delivery 7 am
(3) 6 days delivery with bulk 6 am

SPDO had to look that one up Dave. being in delivery for 16 years or so the best thing about the job for me has been the early finish. To see this being eroded with every revision/ way forward gubbins is quite depressing I will hold my hands up. if it means reaching the point where I am missing the footy every Saturday, i'm outta here, finding a job where you do not get treated like dirt!!!!!

I thought the franchising out of deliveries was a definite no in the 2010 agreement. and if they do it, then its executive action which in turn triggers I/A.

talking about delivery in general, hearing that there is a push towards a general 8-4 delivery shift across Manchester.. would be surprised if it stopped at just Manchester.

Stopping nights at the mail centre would properly account for the later delivery to delivery offices hence the latter shift patterns for postmen.

Very rare we go near 3pm on a Saturday, unless it is at Christmas

When we are done we are done, no lapsing, no going out with left over packets, no going and doing "cut offs" or any of that. The perks of out in the sticks

Also this would increase the length of our days by increasing traveling time to and from work by the change of start - finish times hitting heavier traffic.

Haven't been able to get to the footy on Saturdays for nearly four years now, except on Saturdays off of course. We've got one bloke who hadn't missed a home game for over 25 years until this nonsense came in.

Our finishing time is 3pm on a Saturday and our late manager sticks to it, whether there's anything for us to do or not. It's a surreal experience to witness dozens of posties milling about or sitting on their hands waiting for the clock to tick around.

I would imagine moving finish times to 4pm would have a big effect on the amount of ot being done and cut offs
