MRM: We aim to track 'significantly more parcels'

Nick Landon, managing director of parcels, said this is the year we’re going to change Royal Mail by putting smart barcodes on as many parcels as we can.

Nick said: ‘This year we’re going to roll out cutting-edge PDAs across our network. We’re going to start to scan all of our parcels in the mail centres. We’re going to scan as many parcels as we can on delivery.

‘Customers tell us that access to tracking is second only to price in their decision of which carrier to use so it’s incredibly important.’

How are we going to get there?
  1. We’re going to do it in a series of steps to make sure we get it right.
  2. Our first step in commercial is to put a barcode on as many parcels as we can.
  3. In the summer we want to start tracking those barcodes in mail centres.
  4. We aim to start tracking those barcodes in delivery during Autumn.
  5. In January and February next year, we’ll open up that tracking data to few customers
  6. We’ll open it up to everyone else in April 2016.
Nick adds: ‘Our brand is one of the strongest in the UK. It’s certainly the strongest band of any parcel carrier but there’s a big demand for tracking. If we put those two together and we get it right, it will make us almost unbeatable. ‘

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

I aim to finish at my contract time. Let's see who gets their way, given overtime is voluntary.

Scanning parcels doesn't add much in the way of time, scan whille waiting for them to come to the door, delivered or not delivered. Obtaining signatures adds time and then fighting the low battery alarm adds more. Many of us turn the comms off also to save battery so it could be hours before they get a notification.

Logging on every 15 mins, scanning the correct barcode (if it works and not having to enter the number manually), the inconvenience of having to carry it nearly all the time, (or in and out of pockets every time), along with all parcels packets etc, may only add 30 seconds per parcel, so maybe only adding (another) 15 mins to duty time depending on the time of year!

I'd certainly look forward to Parcels being able to be Tracked (excuse the pun) to a particular duty. At the moment I believe this only applys to the Mech? :hmmmm

I'm fed up of being told, "The Traffic Figures say it's light" and then having redskins full of packets to throw off and deliver. While another duty can collect his packets in a couple of armfulls! Obviously the Traffic Figures for packets are Averaged across the office, but they can really add to a days work if your walk receives above the Average on a regular basis.
