GENERAL SECRETARY ELECTION – STEPPING UP OUR CAMPAIGN
We are entering a crucial phase in the GS Election and I am honoured at the level of support received to date, particularly from frontline CWU Members. At the close of nominations last week we secured a significant majority of overall Branches nominating me.
However, ultimately, it will come down to how hard we work on the ground to maximise the vote for change and crucially the turnout.
I have enclosed my latest letter (based on my Election Address) which sets out five key areas where voting for change will make us a stronger, more relevant Union - able to face the future - bringing CWU Headquarters closer to frontline Representatives and Members.
I would ask that our supporting Branches, Representatives, Activists and Members distribute this letter widely and use it and our other election material to engage face to face with your colleagues in the workplace.
It has become clear to me and many others in recent weeks that the opposing campaign is relying on negative messages and some unacceptable tactics as the vote approaches. We have also seen CWU Headquarters machinery being used to publicise the General Secretary’s campaign.
Their message is one of division, deliberately playing off the Telecoms Constituency against Postal and claiming that if I am elected this would mean the demise of the Telecoms Section in our Union. This is not only vicious nonsense, but it more importantly undermines unity and the whole purpose of what a Trade Union should be. This is coming directly from the same campaign team promoting the General Secretary as the candidate for ‘One Union’.
The truth is, wherever Telecoms Branches have held hustings for both candidates they have chosen to give me their nomination and as I have made clear in all of my communications, I am totally committed to respecting and supporting the autonomy of both industrial executives.
Together we must not allow the politics of fear and division to undermine a democratic election.
It is clear I do not have the support of CWU Headquarters machinery - but I believe we do have the people who matter - frontline Representatives and Members.
We have built a platform to win – I am now counting on you to take our campaign into the workplace and deliver the vote for change.

In standing for General Secretary I am offering leadership for the whole Union focused on creating our future – not reliving the past. To face the future we must change the way CWU is run.

The role has become devalued. I believe the job is about standing up for workers and reasserting Trade Union values in society – not acting as a liaison officer for the Labour Party.
• I would raise the profile of the role and be a stronger advocate for members at work, in the media, TUC and politically.
• I would ensure the protection and enhancement of jobs, pay, terms and conditions is at the heart of everything CWU does.
MAKING POLITICS WORK FOR US – NO MORE BLIND LOYALTY TO LABOUR
We have been let down politically. I am not advocating disaffiliation and I will fight against austerity and the divisive ideas of UKIP for a Labour election victory. But going forward Labour will not continue to get something for nothing.
• We will originate robust policies that support our members and their industries.
• We will work more effectively to achieve our policies by empowering our members, including the retired and youth sections, to campaign locally.
• We will only support MPs who support us.
FOCUSING THE TUC ON MOBILISING WORKERS
Too many Union General Secretaries have detached themselves into a world of high-level Labour Party politics - the TUC is no longer the voice of working people.
I would lead the fight for the TUC to reenergise workplace Trade Unionism and mobilise workers against the UK’s race to the bottom on employment standards.
BRINGING OUR EQUALITY AGENDA INTO MAINSTREAM UNION WORK
I am committed to CWU Representative Structures reflecting the gender, ethnicity and diversity of the membership. My focus will be on taking equality into mainstream Union work, with concrete policies developed between our advisory committees and industrial executives, including sponsoring and mentoring industrial roles.
REVIEWING HEADQUARTERS TO BETTER SERVE MEMBERS AND REPRESENTATIVES
We will undertake a fundamental review of Headquarters to free up more resources to better serve frontline reps and members and strengthen our recruitment and organising agenda.
MY RECORD
As Deputy General Secretary (Postal) I have demonstrated strong and resolute leadership qualities.
• Led from the front in difficult national disputes and delivered resolutions.
• Delivered above inflation pay rises.
• Introduced all change with no compulsory redundancies.
• Secured groundbreaking legal protections restricting what a private company can do.
• Secured legally binding protections for members’ pensions.
MY PERSONAL COMMITMENT
I am in this for the long-haul and have no interest in using the GS role as a stepping-stone to become an MP.
I am passionate about reasserting Trade Union values and voting for change will mean a greater focus across the whole Union on supporting members and frontline representatives.
