No first aider

We are a small DO, 30 odd colleagues, but we have no trained first aider, or H&S Rep or fire officer. In six years here, only heard the fire bell once and that when someone hit it with a York. Any comments from someone who knows what's what. When I queried this with the DOM he said don't worry nothing happens here.

Was the DOM correct when he said "nothing happens here" or have you known serious accidents and/or fires there ?

Not yet, but who knows what tomorrow brings. Surely this is a legal requirement.

Its not a legal requirement, but it is a H&S requirement to have a first aider for every 25 people (it could be every 30, can't remember)
As for the H&S rep, in no one wants to do it, not much you can say about it.
And for a fire officer, never known that before ?

As for first aiders that requirement of 1 is actually a requirement of 3, as the first aider has a day off you need someone to cover that and when first aider is on holiday the first aid cover also has a day off so need a third to cover that. There's lots of offices up and down the country who just tick the box and say we have a first aider but actually when you look into it there's shifts with no cover

No to both of those. But the office does need at least 3 first aiders to cover every shift under hse requirements

One of our first aiders is a line manager, his first priority should be the welfare of his patient, however, I have only seen him in operation once and all he worried about was if the bloke could go out on his delivery or not.

Bet he is also the fire officer so in the event of a fire and injuries what job is he going to do? Again a ticking box exercise which when looked at doesn't actually provide the cover required

No to both of those. But the office does need at least 3 first aiders to cover every shift under hse requirements

I and most of my colleagues have a good enough idea of preserving life, preventing the worsening of the patient’s condition and promoting recovery .
Qualified first aiders don't have a monopoly on such common sense.
