SENIOR DOM ALLOWS PRIVATE USE OF CAR FOR DELIVERY TODAY.

Post by parcelpete »

The office has implemented the new working delivery methods for a while now and the Senior DOM in my delivery office today allowed a collegue to use their own private car on delivery.
When I challanged him telling him that it was illegal he said it was a one off and that the postie could use their own car has long has they only used it from ONE point of delivery.
WTF this can't be right can it???........Wouldnt mind but his van share partner whom is the driver of the pair was actually on duty today and he went out alone, whilst the other one has I say used his own car :no no

Totally out of order, the insurance bond has been withdrawn and there own insurance will not cover them. Commuting allows to the place of work and that's it. Safety rep needs making aware of what he has done. In our area posties have been dismissed for using their own vehicles.

The reasons why we need to remove the use of
private cars
• The date that they must stop using private cars
• The use of private cars on delivery once the date has
passed could have serious consequences such as
disciplinary action
• People will not be covered by Royal Mail insurance if
they use a private vehicle on delivery
• Use the huddle brief to explain the process of
removing private cars from delivery

Would like to know why you're so bothered... So long as the postie knows the risks of Being pulled over or having an accident (the fact that they will be driving uninsured) and they aren't being bullied into it then it's up to them. :hmmmm

Until they run someone over could be you as your near the office and do you think they will stop because they know they are illegal don't think so kind of hard pulling them in the next day when your head has been crushed by being thrown ten feet in the air. :wave

In using private cars you are subsidising a multi-million pound business that pays its own senior managers a lot more than what you receive, unbelievable that some still find this more convenient when presented with the unreasonable and outlawed request. A similar idea to early starters, runners with large bags around the shoulder etc, all you want is paying for all the hours you work without any personal requirement to throw money back to the company as a thank you for letting you work for RM.

Sorry Justanotherstar, thats bang out of order. Thats the sort of attitude that is allowing RM to make more and more cut backs. The managers have a duty of care towards their staff. Scenario: A dom lets a postie use his own car, completely against policy, that postie has an accident and seriously injures someone, and himself, not to mention damage to other vehicles and street furniture. Where is the money going to come from for repairs and compensation, because your not insured to use your own vehicle on delivery?

I'm all right Jack!
(originally: "f**k you, Jack, I'm all right!!" - described the bitter dismay of sailors ("jacks") returning home after wartime in the Navy to find themselves not treated as patriots or heroes, but ignored / sneered at by a selfish, complacent, get-ahead society - phrase was subsequently toned down for acceptable general use.)
Attitude of "every man for himself, survival of the fittest, devil take the hindmost", ... but also, that all the possible advantages (however gained), success (however won) and satisfaction (whatever the cost to others) belong to me first!"
Narrow-focus, narrow-gauge pseudo-Darwinian selfishness glorified as a sensible philosophy of society and life.

I shall tell you why i am so bothered justanotherstar, but before i do... I would just like to say what an incredibly stupid mentality you have, not to mention lack of personal responsibilty or moral ethics that you seem to be lacking heavily in with your ignoramous comment you made on this subject matter. I dont know an aweful lot about stars only that they shine brightly, but in this instance I think it's fair to say that this star is not so bright but a little on the dim side. No offence meant my friend :Very Happy

Has a postie with 10 years service and still commited to delivering the best service I possibly can despite the trials and tribulations of day to day working life and the very real possibility that in the not so coming future RM are going to go down the pan.

We have to endure managers constantly reminding us of working safely practices, blah, blah, blah, taking ownership for our own health and saftey and that of our collegues.
When in fact it is they (In this instance my manger) whom are putting us at risk with sometimes un-ethical and illegal working practices. Our managers have a duty of care to each and everyone of us whilst we are at work.

We have to endure being spyed on (IB) whilst at work as we all know there are a few, bad apples in the cart, but whilst all of this is going on who is watching the managers who think they are above reprimand and are seriously making errors of judgement that if you and I made would result in possibly our dismissal with gross mis-conduct.
I hope this has answered your question justanotherstar.

Actually the manager is also liable and could be prosecuted under H&S legislation, and so could RM.

Its not up to them, they are carrying out a criminal act and as with any crime that could result in death, no matter how unlikely, people have a personal responsibility to take action to stop it, or the consequences will be on their conscience.

Dave Joyce the CWU's National Health & Safety officer has written to Ninian Wilson,Royal Mail's Operations Director this week asking for private cars to be banned on delivery.

Dave wrote to Ninian after a postie using his car on his delivery in Brentwood,Essex knocked down and killed a 63 year old woman.

Dave wrote "This latest fatality is yet another good reason why private car use on deliveries needs to be "banned". Initially it should be strictly controlled and then completely banned ASAP. I am writing to urge your attention to this matter and to swiftly ban the use of private cars on delivery, if Royal Mail is serious about improving safety, this course of action has no alternative."

"The facts following an investigation by the CWU Area Safety Representative Paul Rew is that the Delivery Office Manager has failed to discharge Royal Mail's health and safety duty of care to staff employed by Royal Mail and to members of the public who may be affected by Royal mail operations. The Manager has failed to ensure there is no risk to the health and safety of the staff.

The DOM hasn't undertaken documentary checks as required in Royal Mail's policy and checked drivers licences, insurance and MOT certificates. There has been no Safety Checks undertake on staff's cars being used on delivery. None of the Brentwood DO staff (at the time of the accident) had been 'authorised' to use their cars and none had been instructed by the DOM to sign the Royal Mail private car user's declaration for authorisation and business use insurance cover."
In March 1997 Royal Mail faced charges at Gloucester Magistrates Court after a young Postman at Stroud DO was killed whilst using a private vehicle on delivery after being involved in an RTA.Royal Mail were found guilty and paid fines and costs of £30,000.

It seems to me especially after Dave Joyce listed other incidents that lessons have not been learnt on either side,The CWU from memory do not push this enough and Royal Mail turn a blatant eye to what is going on.

In my DO for instance there have not been any checks for nearly 5 years, casuals when we have had to use them the 1st question asked are, have you got a car.
Then there is the other side,10s of '000s muppet posties using their cars in this manner everyday. While all the security checks in the world could not stop an accident, these posties really have to ask themselves.............why?

The chances of you having an accident are greatly increased and as in the case's of other postal workers you could be imprisoned as well, and live with various consequences for the rest of your life.

Someone in my office used her car the other day as the van had a puncture and she would have had to have waited 2.5 hours for the RAC to come out.
