Fake mail that has to be handed in asap!!!!

Ive been a reserve for 3 years and ive only just come across this made up mail that needs to be handed into the manager. It only seems to be on one fitting in our office and its letters we get occasionally from a named house that doesn't exist that has to be sent back. Some security check?? whats it all about and whats it purpose?

Letters from a named house? You mean the return address, i.e the sender, doesn't exist? I'm confused.

I have one on my walk, fictitious address which is to be handed to a manager immediately.

Have asked a few times what it's about and got various explanations but to be honest i don't think he knew. Last time i handed one in he said he had some more in the desk draw which he'd forgotten about

We had two in my office and one was on my walk - there should be a yellow warning card on the frame to advise you to look out for letters addressed to a fictitious named house on an existing road. The letters are sent to test the network efficiency, i.e. speed at which it travels from posting to receipt at frame in the D.O.
When it is handed in to the DOM he should record the receipt time and return the letter to source. They come via such customers as BT by arrangement with RM. I intercepted quite a few over the years I had that walk but wonder if anyone else bothered when I wasn't on duty and simply killed it off as "not found"

Sorry I meant for a named house. Its basically letters that come to us for a named house that doesnt exist but the street does. On our fitting there is a notice saying that any mail recieved by us for this address has to be handed in without delay. I was told if it goes missing or gets killed off we are in trouble. I asked some fellow posties about it and they said it was a 'test mail' to either catch us out.

Had one today. Killed it off as 'no such address' Never been told anything. Ever. In a small SPDO hardly any contact with parent unit. Does that mean big trouble?

How do you know you've "had a few" ? I hope you wouldn't knowingly kill them off so they might just be wrongly addressed i.e. the house has been renamed years ago

We have a few of these fictional addresses in our DO. There is a yellow card on each walk informing the OPG to hand any mail to the manager/RLE.

These letters are sent under cover to a PO Box.

We get a visit about three times a year to ensure that the yellow cards are in place and that the paperwork is up to date.

why not just address it to the office ?

The office is very vague with us like its some big secret.
