Dear colleague

VOTE HAYES

I am writing to ask for your support to re-elect me as your general secretary. My time as your general secretary has been a success and I have the drive and energy to continue to deliver change for our union as one union.

My opponent offers many hollow promises but you can judge me on actions, not words.

I have maximised support for our workplace reps and for our branches. It is you that are at the core of the union’s strength and I have ensured you have stayed strong and will continue to do so. Some people take you for granted but I appreciate your job is harder than ever. I will provide more training and support and ensure personal and collective representation is at the heart of our work as a union.

Nobody can ignore the challenges we face to protect our current members and grow the union. In the post and logistics sector, there are 150 000 workers not represented by a trade union. Some in the union have been slow to see this threat -it is me that prioritized our organising agenda to set out to recruit workers across the sector.

Only by representing workers throughout the post and logistics sector, and by achieving cross-sector bargaining will we protect and promote terms and conditions and pay for CWU members. Many have closed their eyes to the threat of the wider sector and of non-unionisation and the race to the bottom that follows.

I haven't and I will continue to prioritise the ambition of cross-sector bargaining as the only solution to protecting jobs across post and logistics.

In the telecommunications sector there are 112 000 people not covered by trade union recognition and the threat to job security, pay and conditions is equally severe.

The mobile and telecommunications – and finance sectors are undergoing real change with mergers, acquisitions and a shrinking number of companies.

We must be active in recruiting and organising and in achieving cross-sector bargaining in these sectors to achieve long term stability and security for our members. We must achieve a living wage for the whole communications sector.

The job of general secretary is a hugely important one. It has many responsibilities and requires a mature, rational approach to complex problems.

I have made the CWU a campaigning force in politics and wider society. My opponent has written many words but not one figure on what he commits to.

Slogans are not solutions. While my opponent seeks to de-stabilise our relationships with other trade unions and the labour movement, my leadership has ensured CWU has a high profile in government, in the wider trade union movement and achieves on our broad social responsibility.

These achievements have the sole aim of delivering for you and for everyone in the CWU. Keeping post and logistics in the public eye, fighting for fair competition, parity for agency workers, progress in our campaign for universal broadband, greater protections in law for dog attacks, and many other successes have been the outcome of positive and active campaigns.

I want you to keep working with me on those actions and let's continue to make progress for everyone.

Our union is strong. Please support me to keep it that way. I have kept the union strong, financially secure and independent. I have restructured the union and reduced costs.

I have modernised the union and I will continue to do so. A healthy modern union is crucial to extending our recruitment and retaining our industrial strength.

This election is about actions, not words. Let’s continue to work together on behalf of everyone. Let's continue to deliver.

I have devoted this circular to Equality & Diversity as I believe our work is under threat from the alternative platform. Under my leadership, this is the record:-
Pioneering initiatives& Achievements
24/7 National Bullying and Harassment helpline.
Mandatory Equality & Diversity courses for representatives.
Equality Conferences.
National Women’s, Race, Disability and LGBT committees.
Regional Women’s and Equality Committees.
Deconstructing Equality barriers Through Union Training (DEBUT) project.
Strength, Relevance and Equality through Proportionality project.

Campaigns
Flexible and family friendly working, maternity, paternity rights. (Lobbied Labour government successfully for these)
Equality Act 2010. (Provisions strongly influenced by CWU submissions)
Against domestic violence.
Save Mount Pleasant Nursery. (Won a TUC award)
Anti-homophobia campaigns including “Kick Homophobia Out of Sport” at Bradford City AFC and Plymouth Argyle These initiatives have been incorporated into a TUC toolkit for anti homophobia campaigns.

In the Union
Introduced initiatives and rule changes to promote the involvement and active participation of women, BME, disabled and LGBT members throughout the representative structures of the Union.
Branches now have provisions for Equality Officer, Women’s officer, BAME officer.
Education and training provision now includes courses and schools designed to encourage women and BME members to become more active in the CWU.
Branches now encouraged to ensure delegations to conferences, briefings and forums reflect the gender balance of their members.
Our general and equality conferences now incorporate signers and crèche provision.

In the workplace
Our equality objectives are now incorporated into our bargaining agenda. We are challenging employers and protecting employees from discrimination on the grounds of sex, race, disability, sexual orientation, religion or belief and age.
Pledges
To deliver the objectives contained in the Strength, Relevance and Equality through Proportionality document.
To ensure that all CWU members are treated fairly and equitably and with dignity and respect in their workplaces, the union and society.
To continue to actively promote policies that identify and eradicate any barriers or disadvantages that prevents members participating equally in the workplace, society and the Union.
To intensify our campaigns for equal employment rights for all employees including temporary and agency workers.
To lobby government/s to incorporate the recognition of equality reps into the provisions of the Equality Act.

My opponent’s literature talks of the need to change, yet offers no evidence of delivering change.
A vague commitment to “mainstream” equality ignores all the good work we have achieved.
I offer supported and delivered solutions, not pie in the sky.
