Nominate a Neighbour a National Guideline

Colleagues at Tonbridge MPU and other pilot sites have helped develop a new initiative called Nominate a Neighbour. It has been designed to boost our first-time delivery rates.

The method involves asking customers for an alternative delivery address when they call in with their ‘Something For You’ cards.

The information is shared with the duty holder to help maximise the delivery of items first time.

Tonbridge, and other offices who have supported the trial, have all seen a significant improvement in their first-time delivery rate.

National guideline

We’ve agreed with the CWU that Nominate a Neighbour will be a new national guideline. It will form part of the Operations Standard on first-time delivery and Delivery to Neighbour.

We will be rolling this initiative out shortly; with dedicated Nominate a Neighbour request forms available for managers to order.

Posters will also be available to put on display in enquiry offices to let our customers know about the new initiative.

I hope they are setting a limit on the distance the customer can ask the delivery to be taken to?

I have a customer who leaves a note saying she is 2 streets away (not even on my walk) and if any problems to ring her! 739 every time i'm afraid

It's also to be hoped that the request forms are designed such that the customer and nominee both sign to agree.

(There is no point in Mrs. Jones nominating Mrs. Smith across the road without asking her or gaining her acceptance.)

We have been doing this for months.. Trouble is the nominated neighbour gets no say in it. At first they are OK about it, then after a week or so they start refusing them but again don't want to tell their neighbour that they are sick to death of them, so RM postie gets the flack from both sides. One woman runs a clothing business and gets up to thirty recorded packets of returns a day...So far she has nominated six neighbours, all of them pissed off. And the cherry on the cake is that she is home but too busy to answer the door.!! I killed off two specials that she was shouting from her bedroom window that I sign for them and throw them over the side gate.
