Shingles

Just got back from Doctors & been told I have Shingles,which are on my Side,Back & Stomach only small areas at the minute,but doctor says they could get worse. I am in quite a bit of pain/discomfort & already after just 1 day off work am getting texts from gaffers at work.Dont feel I could do my job outdoors even with the tablets I have been given,even with cream I am bound to irritate my condition.

Shingles can vary from painful to barely noticeable, it felt a bit like a nettle rash when I got it in my face some years ago, it's not contagious and the Dr was only worried that it didn't get in my eyes as that can make you blind. Mine didn't last more than a week or so and I continued to work but on the body is the usual place.

I had it 3 weeks on bottom of back and top of thigh went to work mind over matter tbh bit itchy but not unbearable, can only catch if some one actually touches the area so up to the individual really

Is it infection of the nerve endings or some such? If you're not feeling well enough to work,don't go in, simple really.

New a lad once when I worked in the building trade who had shingles really bad....was house bound for around two or three months....in absolute agony every day.

You have mentioned tablets and also cream but you have not mentioned if your doctor issued a fit note or made qualifications to the fit note ?

Shingles can be infectious to others, causing chicken pox to those that have not had the illness before. Obviously then a Health and Safety issue If you in the workplace with an infection.

The Doctor gave me a sick note for a week without me asking for one,the areas of concern would be covered up by my clothing so shouldn't be contagious,but also I should only wear loose fitting clothing.
I mentioned yesterday that I would be prepared to work in office & see how it goes but they never got back to me.

The problem with the fit note is dependant on the boxes your GP has ticked.
If ticked " you are not for work " then that is exactly what it means. If your GP has ticked the box stating " you may be fit for work taking account of the following advice " Then it follows on to a further 4 boxes and any comments the GP feels relevant eg. adjusted hours, work modification etc.
RM on receipt of your fit note and GP declaration decide if the wish to conform with GP request.
As you have a fit note for 7 days and given them the opportunity of an adjustment and have yet to receive a response then I would not have any concerns at moment. When this fit note runs out it will be your decision on what you decide next a return to work or an extension of your fit note.

Does DOM know that shingles can be dangerous if people in the office have not had chicken pox? Check with h&s rep regarding policy before returning to work, you'd be showing the concern for your colleagues that management should have.
