Hereford System

In my office we have the day off system so was wondering if anyone out there as any experience in putting a Hereford system in place? How many postmen needed etc? Thanks

Apologies, just presumed most knew. Its basically working a 6 day week and getting a week off every five weeks instead of your day off every week.

Its called the Hereford system because I believe an office in Hereford was the first to adopt it.

most offices call it Waddingtons, week system , we have had it for years , and 3 quarters of our office use it, works well , especially when you put annual leave with it , but i have heard Royal mail does not like the system

We also have the Hereford/Waddington system, whereas surrounding DO's have the rotating day off. A week is a long time without a day off in the week, but I guess a lot of guys will work the day off, just like plenty of guys work the week off.

We have a rotating day off, I would rather do the week off thing. most people work their days of as O/T in our office anyway as we are so under staffed

We have this system. We work full time say about 48 hours (roughly) and get paid for 5 days and the 6th day pay is used on 6th week pay every week. It is not a bad system to work as you can have regular holidays if you can afford it, but booking time off is hard as it had to be done in week block. So it is not easy to book long weekend off. If you work on week off you will get a nice paycheck. We recently had a vote to see if people want to change it, and it remain unchanged.

There are advantages and disadvantages to any system.

Well we call it a wallington week or wally week, and yes a 6 day week is a slog, however when you factor in your 6 weeks leave (in my case) and around 8/9 wally weeks in a year totalling up to 15 full weeks off then im sure you can see the benefits. great shift pattern and the only perk I see in the job

I do a Hereford system you need 6 people just as you do with a day off system but instead of the float covering a different job everyday he covers them a week at a time then has a week off

Don't forget that R.Fail claim a week back off your holiday entitlement for doing the wally week,have done since it was introduced in our office ???

We do it in our office, and most people like it, you do 'lose' holiday time though, so even though I have 6 weeks annual leave, with the Wally system you actually get 5 weeks. But it does mean I get 3 weeks in the summer, and a couple of fortnights leave. I don't think our office would go back to rotating day off with out a fight.

But if you break it down we all get the same number of days annually. Those on Wally's get 30 days over five weeks AL. Those on rotational day off get 30 days over six weeks.

Yes that correct, if you get the maximum 6 weeks leave then you only actually get 5, but it still equates to the same. I still had 15 FULL weeks last year

You can also have Christmas week if your rota fall for you.
