What exactly is indoor merging and outdoor merging

I've just read another post all about trials of indoor merging and outdoor merging but nowhere in the post is an explanation of what exactly these entail , could someone please enlighten me .

The physical affects of this new delivery model are already bothering me. My shoulder, upper back and lower back are sore from the two bundle systems.

The employer has finally recognized that the two-bundle delivery method it unilaterally forced letter carriers to use is dangerous. Let us not forget that the employer never conducted a risk assessment or an ergonomic study to identify the musculo-skeletal injury risks associated with this method.

At a guess (and going by the Canadian experience) you would only prep the mail from your IPS.
You wouldn't touch your sequenced mail.
When you go out on delivery you have 2 bundles - IPS and sequenced and you merge them on delivery.

I get loads of missorts in my Mech,so they would be held up for a day then.

I can't see how it'd save any time as you'll still have to divide your sequenced mail into bundles which will need to match the delivery points covered by each non-mech bundle

Wouldn't make a difference in our office as there's guys going out the door over an hour early so they leave all their miss-sorts/re-directions daily.

I regularly find mail in sequenced boxes that isn't even for the walk i'm doing - not just a letter or two - but a whole chunk of another walk! Say even an entire street's worth of mail. Not only that, but it's also not uncommon to find irregularities in the 'sequenced' mail where the sequence order is completely wrong from the frame. It may suddenly skip to a bit near the end for about 40 odd calls, then go back to where it was before. On one occasion, I even found a royal mail special delivery in among the sequence. Then what about walks where the sequence is not compatible with park and loop, as in you have to tie bits of the walk up backwards and do the streets in a different order from the frame. Can't see this working at all.

Well it all sounds like bullsh1t which gives it even more credence that it will be adopted, nobody I know has ever given RM credit for using common sense and as for the union backing the members against RM even though it's obviously unworkable will remain to be seen.

Saw a video about it and it save them 8 minutes by using new methods. Don't think it is worth all the effort and spending and manpower to do it.

That must be what happens when our regular postie has his rotational week off / annual leave. His replacement usually comes at least an hour earlier, runs up our path, and a lot of mail he brings is a day later than our regular guy. But then I'm told he never books any O/T ( whichever round he covers ), whereas the regular guy tells me his has a battle every time he tries to book 30 minutes!

8 minutes might not sound a lot but when the bean counters, board members and shareholders add it all up.

8 minutes per day x 75000 delivery duties x 6 days x 51 weeks (1 week lost to account for 8 days public holidays) = 3,060,000 hours and then superfluously turn that into money saved in wages

Any time saved indoors would surely be lost faffing about outdoors, let them get on with it. I thought it only took 7 mins to prep a tray of mail anyway

It that a standard sequenced tray of ~250, or one rammed so full with ~400 that you have a nightmare getting the first handful of letters out?
