What would happen on 5 day week ?
Would it create a higher ft/pt ratio.
Because of the incresed workload of doing 6 days work in 5.
The FTs that left would need to be replaced by pt moving up & more therefore creating a higher ratio.
Of course the line in sand would be no compulsory redundancies plus a major pay rise 10% plus depending on what day would be ditched eg Sat or Monday.
I am starting to think moving to 5 day week doesnt necessarily have to be a disaster for posties.

Re: What would happen on 5 day week ?
It would be a disaster for the 15 - 20 000 who would lose their jobs overnight.
And if you think that could be managed without recourse to compulsory redundancy I think you are a tad optimistic.

Where do you get the 15-20000 jobs from?customers would not post on a Friday if Saturday was lost.

I think there are about 120 000 posties.
A move to a 5 day week would remove the need for 1/6th of the workforce.

Re: What would happen on 5 day week ?
Saying we will lose 1/6 of postman will not be right. As some will leave to retirement, Death, EVR, new job, new country, ill health retirement and maternity leave
we still need cover for postmen on annual leave.
We still need cover for postmen on sick
We will be able to use full work force on delivery and remove lapsing and absorption as we will have increased workload due to less day to deliver say 5,000 items a week over 5 days instead of 6.
We probably have a special delivery & parcels on Saturday at a price as the like of Amazon will ask for it.

Re: What would happen on 5 day week ?
I have witnessed the dash for EVR this time round & think many more senior posties with years of experience would take the carrott of EVR if the terms remained the same or similar of course.
Im just thinking if these FT left (by choice of course) and were replaced with younger pt moving up it doesnt have to be a disaster.
Eg say an office has 6 float duties & these duties would go if move to 5 day week.
Offer EVR to 6 posties in office (prob be ft) and move some pt up to replace them plus a few more to cope with extra workload.
RM would save a load of hours but there would be a higher ratio of full time jobs in offices for the younger bods left.
And as I say depending on what day RM want to drop a big pay rise for us out of the savings RM make.

Re: What would happen on 5 day week ?
I could see Monday being lost as it will save money on Bank Holiday monday and we will be delivering Tuesday to Saturday, and but the union need to make sure we do it Monday to Friday.
I do think if we work Tuesday to Saturday there must be something to allow us to take Friday and Saturday off every month.

It's a non-starter, customers don't want it, RM don't want it, union don't want it, you couldn't find that number willing to go and there's an argument that reducing the service will just drive customers like Amazon away adding to the problem.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

Re: What would happen on 5 day week ?
I wouldn't say it was bullshit.
We have a business model, where one part of the business is cross subsidised by another part of the business.
When the wealthier side of that business is losing money, (or not making as much money) then obviously that model is not sustainable in the long run.
Why assume everyone would go to a 5 day week?
Some could stay on the current 6 day week, while others (in less desirable parts of the business) could move to a 3 day week.
If my job involved delivering to rural farms in Wales, Scotland or rural Devon I wouldn't be feeling very secure in my employment.

Within a few years parcels and specials will probably be 7 days a week (with people paying a little extra say £1 for Saturday delivery and say £2 for Sunday delivery). I wouldn't be surprised to see letters and large letters being delivered by completely separate delivery offices within the next decade.

You couldn't get much more rural than the duty I've been trained on this week, I'd be amazed if we are still going there 6 days a week in 5 years time in all honesty.
