Fiddling post box bar code.

Collection driver open the post box, get his camera or mobile phone and take a photo of BAR CODE which is inside the post box, he does few more by his running card. Next day he scan all these bar codes in the comfort of his living room with his PDA and photos he taken yesterday...... not bad idea ... but 2 collection drivers have been caught in Thames Valley area and are in trouble.

Apparently they can track where you scanned the bar code from the GPS upload signal, somebody got sacked for scanning photo copies of bar codes away from the location he should be at and they found out via the PDA GPS. simple answer do the job by the book.

Somebody did this at our main depot, he had a copy of all of the bar codes and was zapping them off at home. It all fell down around his ears when on annual leave when the cover man reported some missing bar codes in the boxes

I have heard of it happening but those people were summarily dismissed.

The GPS thing is hardly fool-proof. If you were on collections and it was pissing down all day and you didn't fancy getting out of the van, you could simply sit in the van at the requisite locations and scan the barcodes from your phone. Not that I'd ever condone such action, but I'm sure someone out there has done it.

Anybody who does this is totally and utterly stupid, they are just handing their sacking to management on a plate. To the odd idiot who does this, yes the PDA's plot your GPS position at every scan, but what about the people, houses and cars parked around where a post box is situated? How do you know that someone is not watching you and your actions out of a house window when you arrive at the post box and recording them? What about somebody sitting in a car nearby and watching / recording you? That somebody in a car could simply be a member of public (who are our customers after all) but it could be the IB who have been tipped off about your actions (let's face it, management are not going going to tell you if they suspect you are on the fiddle - they'll just pass it to IB) or they are just parked up and doing routine checks. What about CCTV cameras that are everywhere these days? Most people have smart phones that can record your actions on video. Then there is the question of fraud by claiming overtime or wages but not doing what you are being paid to do? There are so many more ways to get caught in todays world, if you simply open the box on time, scan the barcode within it on time, remove all the letters in it, change the day tab if it has one, shut the door, put the letters in the back of your van and continue on your way......you have no need to give a toss who may be watching you!

Lets be fair opening and scanning a box and doing your job correctly is not that hard. Why would you risk your job ?

Yep, I've got a copy of my route header barcode on my phone - handy when the PDA crashes and loses your collection route.

A bloke at my place got sacked for scanning copied barcodes while sat at home.

My office gave out route bar codes for deliveries - again in case the PDA crashes (or should that be in case the PDA crashes again)

Collections are easy compared to deliveries so how lazy would you have to be to fiddle it.

Btw, what purpose do delivery route codes serve? (I'm not talking about collections).

Maybe as lazy as sector management fiddling the performance figures , allegedly.
