Working for free :(

Post by Kikidee »

I'm 2/3 weeks into my part time job at RM and it's sooo physically draining and truly hard work but I don't mind that as I could do with it to be honest. However I just hate the thought of not actually getting paid for some hrs worked...my hrs are 9am or 9.30am to 2pm or 2.30pm. In reality I get in at 8.40am as it suits me better (school run) and I didn't mind as I thought it'd mean I'd finish early so it all evens itself out however even tho I'm new, I'm doing really long walks which have taken me to anywhere between 2.15pm to 4pm finishes. Not once have I taken a break as I'd rather add it on the end and leave earlier but as I'm struggling to finish on time, I'm losing out there too. So every day is getting in 20 to 50 mins early plus not taking a break (not been told how long that's meant to be) so straight away I'm working 1-2hrs and not being paid. And when they have acknowledged my overtime, they just casually make a verbal note of it - surely it should all be logged? I've no confidence at all that I'll get paid for overtime. I don't even know how to read the payslip properly to check that I have?

But apart from that!

It's simple bud..start at your normal time, don't go in early cause they love that (free work).if you think you can't finish your duty in time tell manager you will be cutting off if they offer overtime take it,at our do reserves like me have an overtime sheet write down all the hours you worked plus your meal relief if not taken.take a copy of yours hours for yourself because they will try & rip you off.(are you in the union) if not join!!! If probs still arise with your pay have a chat with the union rep..if nothing gets done you can ring hr like I had to & you will get your money owed! Always keep your hours owed wrote down...& the job will get easier it's just body has to get used to it..

You need to fill a overtime docket in to claim the overtime

Does your office not have training officers?

They are getting up to 12 hours a week out of you for free

thx for replying, not the kind of stuff feel comfy talking about in person with being a newbie - don't wanna look like i'm all about the money but don't wanna be ripped off either (like u say). i did think of not going in earlier but i find the prepping hasn't been finished for me so it just means i end up going out later and has a knock on effect and i do try to finish the round rather than ring in cos i would like to be kept on once the 6 month trial is up and not sure how judgey they are in terms of that. like i say tho, don't mind helping out and staying out but only if they guarantee i'm getting paid for it. it's completely ridiculous the length of walk and in an area i've never been to when i'm this new! where would i get the hr no. do u know? would it be in confidence? i don't want to be complaining this early on but even just a better understanding of the payslip would be great. i will def start keeping a note of hrs from now on. they've only just this week said they'll sort my extra hrs i did on the induction day and that was cos i chased it up. hate it when u can't rely on something so important being sorted. will join the union...everyone keeps telling me to! need to join the pension too i think.

my body is wondering what the hell has happened...especially my feet haha! one of the women told me she lost 2st after joing but so far i seem to have stayed the same...i don't eat or drink the whole shift tho so i am ravenous when i get home and may be going overboard then i think! my pedometer said i did 16,500 steps today tho, that in itself is a miracle for me who has always worked at a desk!

no, nobody has mentioned an overtime docket. there are trainers yes and i was shadowing a guy for like 2 days then out on my own! apparently this depot has a bad reputation amongst others in the city. the other day i was late coming back so rang the office, couldn't get an answer so was left really with no option but to finish the walk, got back and it was all locked up and my house keys etc was in a locker inside the depot...i myself can't imagine just getting off home as a manager knowing a newbie is out there and not checking all was ok

You need to join Union and get the union rep and a reliable postie working with you keeping an eye for you while you learn the job.

Perhaps we should start a new thing on here where we...
Name the office, name the rep, name the work place coach, and name the other low life's in said office.

Just a thought.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Ask the trainers to go through the overtime procedure, these guys are paid extra to do this with you

If you feel you won't complete on time - if you need to - tell the line manager before you go out. Don't feel guilty fetching any of it back :no no

Seriously, don't worry about that. You go to work to earn money, simple as that.

Be sure that you follow the correct procedures. If you believe that you will not finish on your time, call your manager over. Explain that you will not complete in your time and ask them what they want to do about it. Put the ball in their court. Make them make the decision. If you are willing to work over, and they suggest you do and will pay overtime, all is good. If they say they will not pay overtime, tell them you can not complete. Again, ask them what they want to do about it. They have 2 choices. Take the excess off you, or tell you to take it out, attempt to deliver. If they tell you to take it out, ask them what time they want you to ring the office (normally between 12 -1pm) to come and take it from you. If you have done all this, and nobody answers the phone, you can bring it back. Do not just bring it back without these procedures, you are likely to get the sack. Join the Union as soon as you can and involve your rep. Managers WILL put pressure on you. Stand strong.

More importantly, do not abuse your body. If you are walking all that time you need to take breaks and you need to take on fluids even this time of year and at least light snacks to keep you going. To not eat or drink until you get home is going to cause you a lot of problems in the long run.
