I would be surprised if it lasts another 12 months.Rommagic wrote:How long can people on here see Royal Mail providing a delivery six days a week?.
Though if a move to one wave produces enough short term savings, it might last 18 months.
Regional pricing may give it the kiss of life or may kill it stone dead.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Clash, what's this move to one wave? I've heard it suggested, but no details.

Re: Six days a week.
The suggestion is to have only one sequenced wave of mail instead of 2, which will arrive around the time you currently get your second wave.pinstripe wrote:Clash, what's this move to one wave? I've heard it suggested, but no details.
There were rumours of a trial, but obviously the union are against it.
Most people wouldn't need to start before 8. It would end any innovative attendance patterns (9 day fortnight etc) because of the shorter working day and mean a predominantly p/t workforce unless we went back to a 6 day week. And of course there would be job losses among those that work on the machines and transport the mail.
As TNT/Whistl expand their operation and take away the sequenced mail, there is less need for 2 waves and a strong economic argument for one wave.
The removal of the USO and the 5 day delivery will be politically unpopular (especially toxic in an election year) so one wave might be a stepping stone.
Who knows?

You will be surprised then because on the 27th January 2016 we will still be delivering 6 days per week.clashcityrocker wrote:I would be surprised if it lasts another 12 months.Rommagic wrote:How long can people on here see Royal Mail providing a delivery six days a week?.

Re: Six days a week.
Well if OPGs played a longer game than the idea of gaining a few minutes that day, they might want to think carefully about what bad practices they do which artificially reduces the workload requirements, such as...Rommagic wrote:People are getting worried because of the mail volume on a Tuesday.Talk of EVR Royal Mail laspe think that's the long term answer.
Filtering mail for the next delivery point on the move, instead of stationary outside the previous address (easily could be in excess of 2 seconds per call)
Nesting D2D instead of separate items, not only against official policy, but by being separate it means more stationary filtering time
Carrying pouches and using HCTs as mobile bag drops, instead of using delivery method tools (HCT, LWT) correct for the walk in question, (light pouches should only be carried for specific addresses such as for blocks of flats)
Giving addressee 1 minute to answer the door for an attendance call, instead of ~10 seconds before writing out the P739
Today was very light for letters in my office section, but the runners still ran and gave management ammunition to think about extended walks and redundancies, a few of us did the job properly and only finished contract hours 10 mins early (and then did some constructive work until finish time).

Sometimes people will just have to admit there isn't sufficient work to fill the contracted hours.IloveMYredTROLLEY! wrote:Well if OPGs played a longer game than the idea of gaining a few minutes that day,Rommagic wrote:People are getting worried because of the mail volume on a Tuesday.Talk of EVR Royal Mail laspe think that's the long term answer.
People finishing 90 minutes early isn't due to not filtering the mail etc and any attempts to string it out are as harmful to us as early starts etc.

Re: Six days a week.
I never stated people would finish 90 minutes early in the post above, but it could very easily be ~45 minutes. If we work to a reasonable pace, doing things correctly, how is that as harmful as early starters?clashcityrocker wrote:Sometimes people will just have to admit there isn't sufficient work to fill the contracted hours.IloveMYredTROLLEY! wrote:Well if OPGs played a longer game than the idea of gaining a few minutes that day,Rommagic wrote:People are getting worried because of the mail volume on a Tuesday.Talk of EVR Royal Mail laspe think that's the long term answer.

None of the examples above are stringing it out, they are the sorts of things that many OPGs do incorrectly, as a response to the impossible workload pressure they are under. But all they do is continually lower depot budgets and ultimately cost jobs.
It's also worth pointing out that some of these time saving practices could cost you your enhanced RM sick pay, if your bad practice comes out during the accident fact finding interview process, especially if you have for instance a bad back history on record.
Next you will be telling us that "doorstepping" parcels or leaving any mail in dodgy places is acceptable.

No I spoke of people finishing 90 minutes early because that is the reality I know.IloveMYredTROLLEY! wrote:

Your post suggested anyone finishing early was not doing the job correctly. That isn't always the case.
Sometimes they finish early because there isn't enough work to fill their contracted hours.
And pretending to be working tars a lot of other posties with the same brush and that isn't helpful.
Why would I advocate doorstepping? It is a sackable offence.

Re: Six days a week.
I could see it reducing to 5 days a week but it will be Tuesday to Saturday knowing Royal Mail. Let hope CWU will not let this happens.

How the hell do you expect the CWU to stop RM doing what they want to stay profitable?Darren Bent wrote:I could see it reducing to 5 days a week but it will be Tuesday to Saturday knowing Royal Mail. Let hope CWU will not let this happens.
Saturdays are always going to be part of our working week, in our office it's one of our busiest days unfortunately but i knew i would have to work Saturdays when i started working for the company
