Callers Office Duty
Am looking for a bit of advice re the callers office duty. Have been overlooked for this post countless times, with the job going to new starters and on the last occasion being told that because I could not drive I was not eligible to apply. Is this right? And if not what can I do?

Re: Callers Office Duty
Well it is a post that is not on seniority but suitability however unless there is a specific necessity to be able to drive as part of the duty then that shouldn't be a factor. The office I worked in had a senior postie but he couldn't drive and has done it for years.Midnight+13 wrote:Am looking for a bit of advice re the callers office duty. Seniority does actually come into it, it should be the most senior suitable person who gets it, there should be a test and then out of every one who passed the most senior gets the job

Re: Callers Office Duty
Seniority is only a factor if the candidate is suitable, there is no test other than an informal interview when the applicants are known. Long servers would have the edge because of their knowledge of the processes involved in redirection, returns, custom and surcharge rates etc.zx135 wrote:dvbuk55 wrote:Well it is a post that is not on seniority but suitability however unless there is a specific necessity to be able to drive as part of the duty then that shouldn't be a factor. It's not just a case of a informal interview and then dom picks who he thinks is best, there is a selection process to be followed and then out of all the suitable candidates the most senior suitable person gets the job

There's a test which involves maths english skills etc (though i think it should actually change to involve a computer test also) then a formal interview after which the most senior person who atained the pass mark gets the job

Re: Callers Office Duty
Well it's a good job there was nothing like that when I did it, the woman who I took over from at lunchtime was absolutely diabolical, I swear she'd have had a job reading a test paper because you've no idea how difficult it was trying to find a parcel if she'd put it on the shelf - I once found one that wasn't even in our delivery area and it wasn't even an address in our area. The saving grace was there was nowhere near as many parcels as there are now.zx135 wrote:There's a test which involves maths english skills etc (though i think it should actually change to involve a computer test also) then a formal interview after which the most senior person who atained the pass mark gets the job

Re: Callers Office Duty
Well in that case your office is not applying the correct procedure. A few posts are by selection an seniority, the callers office is one and I think the Book Room is the another, oddly enough the Locker duty isn't.Whysoslowyehcfc wrote:Don't know where you work, but in my office its senority only, as it should be!dvbuk55 wrote:Well it's a good job there was nothing like that when I did it, the woman who I took over from at lunchtime was absolutely diabolical, I swear she'd have had a job reading a test paper because you've no idea how difficult it was trying to find a parcel if she'd put it on the shelf - I once found one that wasn't even in our delivery area and it wasn't even an address in our area.
