Yet another dog attack

I've been a postie now for 14 months and yesterday suffered my third dog attack although this time it was by two dogs. When I told the owner that I shall be reporting this he shouted " oh f..k off you tart" and then his missus started shouting at me, do you think it should be RM policy that when such an attack occurs the DM should notify the police rather than the postie where she/he could face a comeback? the only way these dopey dog owners will learn is if the police get involved and then we will be better protected.

But do you really think the police will be interested ? Just your word against theirs unless there's flesh missing or at least teeth marks.

Well, you've more confidence in the boys in blue than me.
Several years ago they weren't interested that I had been assaulted despite me having the vehicle registration number and contact details of a witness.

The Police will not deal with the incident unless you, the victim, makes the report.

In the event of a dog attack whilst on duty, there are several things which should be undertaken:

• Report it to your Manager as soon as possible.
  You are contracted to do so.
• Ensure that you rigidly follow the advice of your Medical Professional.
  Regardless of your Managers attempts to distract you.
• Make sure your Safety Rep is made aware of the incident.
  If they're not involved you're likely to be steered into a non advantageous position.
• Report it to the Police and get an incident report number.
  The law does not allow you to be attacked by a dog.
• Complete an ERICA.
  Make sure it is in your own words and ensure that you sign a paper copy of it.
  There is no time limit for this; your Manager is a liar.
• Inform the DSS about your Accident at Work.
  Benefits may be available should there be any long term problem resulting from your injury.
• Ask your Manager about the Royal Mail Dog Attack Compensation Scheme.
  This doesn't just cover your basic wage but also your usual overtime.
• Get an Accident Claim Form, from your Union/Rep and complete it.
  This is called an LS3 and allows the Union Solicitors to fight to compensate you.
• Take part in the Manager's Accident Investigation along with your Unit/Area Safety Rep.
  Your Rep may be the difference between a proper investigation or a blameworthy witch-hunt.

Report it to your DOM and at the same time, tell them that until resolved, you are no longer prepared to deliver to that address.

We get told "If you feel threatened in any way - do not deliver". Just don't deliver, they'll soon get the message then.
