Cutting Off / Overtime / Regulations
Howdy,
I'm sure it's a subject that get covered a lot, but I was just wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of some info about enforced overtime and cutting-off. I'm guessing there's something about it in the most recent CWU/Royal Mail agreement and (I'm assuming it's not legal!) some sort of legislation?
There's been a bit of an issue at our DO since we started van-sharing last year and I'd like to know what my position is and to be able to draw my colleagues' and managers' attention to the relevant information!
(Yes, the union rep knows about the situation, that's why I'm on here, not talking to him about it)
Thanks

enforced overtime.

Royal Mail managers.....about as popular as a t.urd in a swimming pool!
The DDA/Equality Act demands action,NOT words......adjustments NOT Occupational Health referrals.Case No:2505901/09
Royal Mail is an Equal Opportunities Employer..It discriminates against everybody.

Not sure what your smileys mean. Pointing and laughing? And Father Christmas? Was there supposed to be a link in the comment maybe? To clarify, our managers usually say something like 'we can't have people bringing mail back' but then won't actually explain why not. We're pressured into working O/T we don't want to do and the actual wording that tells them they're out of line would be helpful to have to hand.

Re: Cutting Off / Overtime / Regulations
Thanks! Very helpful, but I couldn't find anything in it that says definitively that overtime's voluntary. Or is it more of a contract/legal issue?
The best I've been able to google about the legal situation is this:
https://www.gov.uk/overtime-your-rights ... y-overtime" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
but that page doesn't have direct links to the actual law. Any ideas?

Are you being serious regarding overtime?
Just say 'NO'

Yeah, totally serious. It's been like that as long as I've worked there. There are maybe 60 walks and maybe 20-30 people claiming O/T on a Wednesday/Thursday but no one ever brings mail back. Literally never. It seems to be a problem that's specific to our office and the rep's fully aware. Not sure I want to be the first to do it.

Re: Cutting Off / Overtime / Regulations
What is the question though? Nobody in my office is ever asked if they want to do overtime, I certainly haven't. It's just assumed that you will always deliver everything, and it's made hard for anyone who needs to finish on time. It's not a huge problem for my personally, as I'm part time and the extra work comes in handy, but it's the principle of it. I don't like it being assumed that I will stay out as long as it takes no matter what.makingsounds wrote:

It's a country-wide problem from what I've read on here, certainly sounds like my office.no_return_address wrote:Yeah, totally serious. It's been like that as long as I've worked there. Re: Cutting Off / Overtime / Regulations
Nobody in our office dares bring back mail totally out of the question, infact I was in doing collections as the girl went sick, my collection started at 12pm and at 11:00am another person went sick on duty and the manager dumped the mail on me and said get it done, out I went with it and I did as much as possible then returned for my collection at 12pm and told the PHG that mail was there left for whatever to be done with it, he then telephoned the manager and the manager went BOOM! Luckily someone must have come back before their time as the next day it was cleared when I checked but I got the most near abusive conversation I've ever had with my manager being talked down at because "WE DON'T FAIL MAIL" "WE JUST DON'T FAIL MAIL" "IT DOESN'T HAPPEN" "PARCELS CAN BE SKIMMED" "MAIL MUST BE CLEARED" "WILFUL DELAY OF MAIL" yadada he said he would have put me out the door with my p45 if that mail hadn't been delivered by another postie and was out-raged that I'd even bring back mail.

Re: Cutting Off / Overtime / Regulations
Try what I did
Email just say it and ask if overtime is now compulsory
Then duck when the fallout reigns down
Its voluntary,not compulsory.
Its sick management using certain tactics on a daily basis.
Use the opg cutting off procedure it legal and works.

Parcels cannot be skimmed. This is also a USO failure.Daaav wrote:Nobody in our office dares bring back mail totally out of the question, infact I was in doing collections as the girl went sick, my collection started at 12pm and at 11:00am another person went sick on duty and the manager dumped the mail on me and said get it done, out I went with it and I did as much as possible then returned for my collection at 12pm and told the PHG that mail was there left for whatever to be done with it, he then telephoned the manager and the manager went BOOM! Re: Cutting Off / Overtime / Regulations
Thanks for the replies people.
I guess what it boils down to is: If I use the 'opg cutting off procedure' correctly and a manager helps me with the workload as they see fit, BUT I'M STILL GOING OVER, is there something in writing somewhere that I can fall back on when I bring the mail back and p*iss off home?
I ask because they HAVE helped me out with some prep, but on busy days it's just not enough. Assuming I've done everything by the book, will I have union support when I'm the first guy in the office to bring mail back? If not, what's the next step? Get them to do the follow me round with a stopwatch and a clipboard bit?

Parcels are NOT part of the USO. That's why, the most important part of royal mails future are left when there are "operational difficulties"Son Of God wrote:Parcels cannot be skimmed. Read the procedure
You can also call an hour before finishing and let them know the score
Keep texts ,some managers have amnesia
