I'm no businessman but I can't understand how firms such as TNT/Whistl can be investing heavily into what they obviously see as a profitable and expanding delivery sector whilst at the same time other established firms such as Citylink are failing and going into administration?

They both offer the same poor t&c's and wages so that doesn't explain why one would be so optimistic about the future whilst the other firm fails to be a viable business?

Not necessarily, maybe City Link went under because their pricing was too cheap and didn't leave enough profit to make it viable.

We all want free/cheap delivery but i'd much rather pay if it means i get my goods on time and intact, cheap is not always cheerful!

Come on people can we at least spare a thought for the 1000's of workers that found out on Christmas day they'd probably lost there job and have almost certainly worked the last few weeks for free as wages aren't likely to be paid.

It is not nice for people who work for them. Shame on the boss not giving them warning. If the company are in serious trouble, it should let employee know in advance. So they won't buy expensive things like new TV or holiday or whatever and keep their money. At it is Citylink not Citilink.

Look at who is delivering parcels.

There is plenty of work. We might get an increase of business for parcels. But there are declines ie Ebay parcels going to Argos call and collect instead.

Come on people can we at least spare a thought for the 1000's of workers that found out on Christmas day they'd probably lost there job and have almost certainly worked the last few weeks for free as wages aren't likely to be paid.

Of course it's a shocking state of affairs but they must have had an inkling that the company was in trouble. It had been losing money for a long period and last year investors paid Rentokil just £1 for it, a similar situation Woolworths were in before the big bang. It does go to show that competition forces prices and conditions for the workforce lower and lower until the company is no longer sustainable, it may not be the only one to go.

As an earlier poster said I do feel sorry for the workers, the ones likely to suffer most are the owner drivers I expect they were working every hour they could up to Christmas and will be at the bottom of the pile for getting paid. its even worse when you consider they will have had to pay out to work running their own van, paying for diesel etc only then to perhaps get nothing back. Its not all good news for us either as a lot of ex City Link employees may be looking to join RM and will be more flexible and willing to put up with what's asked of them just to have a job. We have got runners now causing us problems and we could get desperate runners!

One of the failures in recruitment is the part time scenario felt across the length and breadth of RM with few exceptions. These employees are exploited by RM in order to earn a living wage they will do whatever is necessary regardless, no one can blame them really but it certainly makes life difficult for long time full time employees who want to make sure that agreements are adhered to.

When I posted this it was not without feeling for those who have lost their livelihoods although I detest the notion of self employed drivers undercutting us and they being exploited by the fat cat bosses.
