Zero hours contract

A friend has just been accepted in our office. He just got an email saying he will be permanent but on a zero hours contract.
I didn't think Royal Mail were doing zero hour contracts.
Anybody no anything about this?????

He will be in the same delivery office as me. Starting end of January. So I'm guessing contract is with Royal Mail. I gunna speak to Dom in morning for him. See what he says..

20 hours contracts that last for years are bad enough (I'm now into my sixth), but the use of a zero hours one really does show that the employer is racing to the bottom in order to 'compete'. These type of contracts should be against the law, the worker is no better than a slave in effect, if they don't work some hours for nothing they are offered little or no hours on the basis there is 'no work'. Workers end up competing against themselves within the same company, inhuman.
