the article in this months 'voice' by bob Gibson is very misleading to say the least.... it mentions the 2014 Christmas agreement with royal mail aims ''to maximise opportunities for local agreements enabling people time off on the sat 27th due to anticipated lower volumes of traffic'....so members have a better chance of enjoying a four day break. bob Gibson said its the view of the postal executive that this is the best way forward and members should contact their unit rep/area rep for further details......so I did exactly that, and contacted the rep with high hopes. only to be told 'NO', he had received an LTB a few weeks ago saying we couldn't have it,...something to do with the regulator......are they on the same planet as us.!!

Yes.
Saturday 27th is a normal working day. therefore Royal Mail will be working.
However due to the anticipated traffic, there should be opportunities to maximise the number of available slots for people to be off and enjoy the extended break.
Obviously those working that day would have to cover the work of those off.

I was told that RM are expecting record sick leave on the 27th and that annual leave slots are to be withheld to cater for it.

I got it off no problem. Only put in for it as I got a letter telling me I had 6 days to use up, seen that week was still free so put in for the sat. Wed is my day off so nice long break for me. :)

Royal Mail refused to ask for a non-service day when approached by the CWU. The reason given was they though we couldn't ask for non-service day at the same time as trying to raise the alarm over competition

With Christmas Day and Boxing Day falling on a Thursday and Friday in 2014, annual conference discussed a motion asking the CWU leadership to negotiate a 'non-service day' for Saturday 27th, and representations were made by the union's senior team on that basis.

In response to this request, Royal Mail advised the union that this would necessitate a formal application to Ofcom for an exemption to the USO - an application that the business were not prepared to make on the basis that it risked giving a negative impression to the regulator at a time when our industry is facing ever-increasing competition. Without the support of Royal Mail there is no chance of OFCOM agreeing a no service day!

I can see lots of packets that day, and probably a DFS sale shot to every house, the lowest and worst Managers in ,all the top Managers will be enjoying their Christmas break !
Public will want packets but nothing else.
