Getting overtime while still in duty time

Whats the stance on people getting paid overtime while still in duty time ?

If a postie gets paid say 2 till 6 for doing an extra half a walk and gets back at say 4 because he went fast no breaks etc,Who will be there to say you have broken X rules or whatever?

Doesn't happen like that in our office. Anyone that does OT agrees what they're getting paid for it with the manager (1hr, 2hrs or whatever), they do the work and get paid the money. Doesn't matter what time they finish.

Officially it may be a no-no, but the simple fact is if managers didn't pay it like that then they wouldn't get anything covered.

That is exactly how it happens in our office.
My advice to the manager was. You may fixing a small problem, but creating an even bigger one.

The problem arises when work colleagues find out that 'Davie The Runner' or 'Easy Walk Bob' is getting 2 hours OT and is starting it after finishing his duty hours early at half 12-1'oclock when there are still guys out delivering till half 2 or later with no OT.

If Postie A gets 3 hours docket for covering half a duty but only actually does 2 hours OT, what is his overtime rate?
If Postie B extends by 1 hour due to being on a busy duty is he entitled to the same OT rate as Postie A?

The National Agreement says work all your paid hours.
Any local agreement about OT is just a load of old bollocks that actually undermines the CWU.
It is, as always, piss poor management.

A further problem arises when both Davie The Runner and Easy Walk Bob are on leave. The DOM then has to try to persuade Tough Walk Tony or Monster Walk Mike to do an extra 2 hours after completing their duties - knackered and fit to drop - at 2.30.

The real problem is that the manager has already gone home when the runners return to the office - if he was there he should be allocating them work to take them up to their finishing time. NOT paying them by arrangement early in the day so he can swan off home with no uncovered walks to worry about after everyone has gone out on their walks.

the problem with that argument is that people who do overtime would just just go slower and then fly round the extra or decide not to do it

Admittedly I have done this a couple of times when paired with a runner. The DIM comes up, offers us an extra loop or two which has a fixed rate i.e. 1.5 hours/45 minutes each of the pairing. All we do is sign the docket sheet afterwards if it's printed in time or he just tells the lady to stick it in the system for us and then we go faster knowing we have extra, and invariably it's done in normal time.

It's effectively like 'piecework' which is in conflict with normal pay and therefore leads to the consternation shown in this thread. As said, the DIMs have left usually, nobody bothers signing out anyway so we're happy with effectively getting double-pay for an hour, the DIM's got all the deliveries covered and it seems accepted as 'one of those things' where the rules are in direct contrast to the everyday practicalities of the job.
A bit like trolleys - you're supposed to use them, very few do and nobody says owt as the job is speeded up and cutting-off or going-over payments reduced.

Apparently, one of our guys told me he got paid 6 hours overtime for doing another delivery on his own, on top of his own duty for the day.


And yet I saw him finish when everyone else has at the scheduled time?? He must either be one of the fastest cowboys in the west or have his missus working with him


So technically....he was supposed to be on pay whilst 9pm not 3pm!! lol
