We’ll be introducing the same number of hand-held scanners as are currently in use

This is about the same number of devices currently in use. All our people will have access to one of the new devices, which will be available to our people working in deliveries, collections and mail centres.

Over five years, we will be investing around £130 million in the next generation of hand-held devices. This will have major benefits for our customers – and you.

The expected benefits are:

More flexible delivery for customers. For example, by enabling them to tell us a safe location to leave their item if they are not at home.

Improved information management and enhanced tracking. Parcels customers can add information-rich barcodes to shipping labels.

More efficient and reliable, with longer battery life. Monitoring prevents issues like battery deterioration.

More power and memory. We’ll be able to introduce new features quicker and at lower cost.

Provide some ‘over the air’ upgrades to keep the software up-to-date. There’ll be no need to send the scanner back to the service desk for this.

Looking good

We expect that the new scanners will have a look and feel similar to smartphones, but built for regular operational use. The scanners are likely to have a large display with toughened glass, for ease of use.

Why are they waiting until Autumn 2015 ?

And why oh why do Royal Mail take forever to do anything !!!

Its no wonder the competition are miles ahead, they do things pronto.

TNT can completely rebrand themselves as Whistl virtually over night.... yet Royal Mail take 5 years just to dish out new scanners, not including the one year it's going to take them (till autumn 2015) just to prepare to dish them out!!

And we're supposed to be a logistics company!

Not accounting for the new I.T system, which will no doubt be implemented late and over budget, RM are paying £1700~ for these PDAs, surely for that quantity they could have got them at a better price, whoever runs procurement needs a rocket up them if thats the best price they could achieve. Does anyone know which company is the preferred supplier for them? Be interesting to see who's on the board of directors.
