Re: who to believe?
Our business model (such as it was) was to cross subsidise the far away and difficult to reach delivery points with the money spinning city work.daveyeff wrote:royal mail are saying that the failure of the ''uso'' is imminent,,,but Ofcom say they've got evidence that clearly shows it is not under threat? whats going on.
As the city work is lost to TNT the ability to cross subsidise is lost and consequently the business model is dead.
The USO is a sweet anachronism that now has no place in the modern world we are being asked to live in.
The USO is unsustainable.
Royal Mail (in its current form) is unsustainable.
By extension the CWU is unsustainable.
Apart from that I think everything is rosy .........
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Re: who to believe?
OFCOM are incompetent. They are worse than politicians if that were possible. It's an old boy's network of retirees at 55 like coppers and teachers or civil servants getting another 10-12 years of pensionable public sector employment. If you expect an informed decision from them, expect to be disappointed. You may as well ask Paul Gascoigne to formulate a national defence strategy. RM should be very worried. We, and many MP's already are.
We can all thank the E-USSR for the original issue; they insisted on the UK opening the postal market up to competition, no matter how unfair, inefficient and skewed it is.
I've said before, despite any agreements that when our backs are against the wall only WE can stop the inevitable destruction of our business by refusing to handle access mail. Yes, it would cost 100m+ PA in profits (but still leave a profit nevertheless) but would render TNT or Gristle or whatever it's called and UK Mail defunct in a month. We and business can live without them, but they can't exist without us. That's the bottom line, and one we are heading towards now.
Of course we'll instead see RM, the Govt. and the CWU sleepwalk into the abyss of no return, all the while sounding off with words urging patience, conciliation and understanding.

Re: who to believe?
The CWU is very quiet on all matters at the moment. Our Rep has a day off most week to go to meetings but never feeds back to the members. When asked what has happened or discussed, says nothing much to concern you. All we can assume its just a jolly for him, which is better than working I suppose. Where does the £1400 plus in subs from our little office go each year; on jolly's I presume.

Re: who to believe?
Just heard some dickhead on the radio, saying he gives the USO 3 years maximum. He also said that deliveries should be 3 x a week, so we can carry more . What a prick.bustedflush wrote:OFCOM are incompetent. They are worse than politicians if that were possible. Re: who to believe?
You may well be right, but Royal Mail certainly weren't saying all that a year ago when it was privatised. They said many times that the USO could only be got rid of with legislation. What's changed? Was there no competition a year ago? An onlooker could be forgiven for thinking that the business we all work for change their tune to suit whatever agenda they have to push that particular week.clashcityrocker wrote:Our business model (such as it was) was to cross subsidise the far away and difficult to reach delivery points with the money spinning city work.daveyeff wrote:royal mail are saying that the failure of the ''uso'' is imminent,,,but Ofcom say they've got evidence that clearly shows it is not under threat? whats going on.

Re: who to believe?
What we have is a Chief Executive that has the ability to turn a company round from a loss making situation into a profit making organisation in the only way she knows and that is stripping the workforce to the bone and forcing unachievable workloads on those who are left. She has now done this but all of a sudden she has nowhere else to go, as she does not have the skills or abilities to move this company forward into a growth organisation. My belief is that she will be quickly despatched within the next 12 months in favour of someone who does have the skills to move this company forward without having to resort to skinning the workforce.

Re: who to believe?
Ofcoms biggest flaw is that any appointment to the board has to be approved by the Department and Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). That means its a political appointment in all but name. The Conservatives who started the IPO want it to be a success, ergo they can't have Ofcom rocking the boat and saying its failing already only 1 year after the sell off. Just an opinion.

Re: who to believe?
To be fair, she never pretended to have those skills. She was brought in to get us privatised as smoothly as possible. Whether that was deemed a success or not, she is being paid handsomely but i don't reckon she'll see another Xmas here.Lincox wrote:What we have is a Chief Executive that has the ability to turn a company round from a loss making situation into a profit making organisation in the only way she knows and that is stripping the workforce to the bone and forcing unachievable workloads on those who are left. That's what all the clowns in charge have done, right back to Crozier and Leighton. Cut jobs, give the remaining staff more work and get paid millions for it. Hardly rocket science but somehow these 'captains of industry' turn up rich and walk off even richer.Lincox wrote:What we have is a Chief Executive that has the ability to turn a company round from a loss making situation into a profit making organisation in the only way she knows and that is stripping the workforce to the bone and forcing unachievable workloads on those who are left. As far as the USO goes I think we'll be ok short-medium term, maybe 10 years, though there may be a big change (5 day deliveries maybe) in order to prop up RM's profits. After that it's anyone's guess.

Re: who to believe?
She has stripped the business to it's bleached bones, sold what she can sell without reinvesting. There is little left, beyond a major staffing cull and a part time zero hour contract workforce. Customer service has been wiped out, we will all be WHISTL ING the more she adopts the competition model.Lincox wrote:What we have is a Chief Executive that has the ability to turn a company round from a loss making situation into a profit making organisation in the only way she knows and that is stripping the workforce to the bone and forcing unachievable workloads on those who are left. Re: who to believe?
with workloads on most of us so high that we rarely finish on time i dont see how she has much left to cut costs. Cutting staff would just mean theres no one to do the work, so I dont see that happening. I can see an attack on paid meal breaks as these are rare these days in other fields, so thats quite a lot of hours they can get back right away.enskied wrote:She has stripped the business to it's bleached bones, sold what she can sell without reinvesting.
