cutting off

Post by osgoody1970 »

it's about time the CWU got on top of this instead of leaving it up to the individual to go it alone with the managers, leaving their members to be bullied and harassed, when they only want to work to their time. the first thing a manager will say, when you tell him/her that you will not be able to complete is, "WHY NOT" you tell him/her the mail is too heavy, he says "there's nothing there", so a difference of opinion ensues, with , YOU, the person who knows what he/she is talking about and a manager who doesn't know the walks insisting there is time to complete the walk, because it is down to him/her to clear the office, the CWU, needs to look at a different approach to cutting off,

Spot on. Most managers haven't done a delivery for years, especially since 2010 when all these new methods came in. They should have to go out at least twice a week on different deliveries. They use a dodgy computer system as a guide to argue the case that you can't complete. Wish it was as easy as that.

Yes I agree with that and its always been a problem if you stand alone.

What used to happen was during the ips the CWU rep would monitor the amount of mail being placed on the benches. At a certain point he would call a halt and we would stop sorting and go to our frames to start prepping. He would then come around and ask if you wanted to book overtime or not. With this information he would go into the office with the dom and arrange a block of overtime for everyone who wished to book.

You would then be called back onto the ips to finish the remainder. If you were one of the people who had told the rep that you did not wish to work over then you had no worries about harassment from management as they already had been told. They would simply come up to you and ask what you would be leaving in the frame.

Its different know and we simply clear all the mail and its then left to yourself to tell the manager you will not complete. Of course on a one to one basis the manager finds it easy to apply pressure and invite you into his office for a cosy chat where he will show you the days traffic figures compared to last months which mean nothing as often the problem is due to the amount of packets, scans and knocks on the door.

Its just another thing that has gone wrong in the job.
Rows of houses all bearing down on me........I can feel their blue hands touching me.......All these things in all positions.........All these things will one day take control..........

Beautifully put. What should happen is the manager should stand at the end of each aisle and ask if there's any problems completing. Staff can then turn round and tell him what needs leaving, if it's a bad day - Lapsing, packets, a loop, whatever.
It won't happen of course, as it's easier to wear down one individual alone. I've seen it happen many times, where a lino gets told by multiple duties that lapsing can't be done: Blown gaskets and linos going into the office and locking the door.

The business is never going to stop this lapsing lark. They know how profitable they are.

It has got that bad in some of our sections whereby managers have adopted an "its you or us" attitude to getting the additional lapsing done. And most managers i've had the misfortune to come across would rather poke their own eyes out do deliveries, which generally means, its bullying and harassment all the way towards staff who can't get the collapsed duties or even their own duty done.

There needs to be a better procedure in place. Lapsing is one of Royal Mail's biggest problems, especially in the run up to xmas. Management are telling us that they do not have any extra staff. But even working our days off is now becoming an ordeal with lino's intending to collapse the duty first and then having someone on standby and at very short notice in case there are problems.....
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

I don't see why we should have to tell them every bleeding day.

They know people won't complete on certain days its a really tedious exercise going in there everyday to have the exact same conversation

Exactly.
In every other job where overtime is not contractual management come to you if they need a bit of overtime doing, In our job we have to go to them if we don't.

I don't worry about informing managers about leaving in. On busy days I tell them to give the overtime to someone who would like it. They don't like it but tough :Very Happy

Simple 'transparent' - 'everyone aware of the fact' procedure should be:

Walk #

Walk Model tested number of livemail / D2D drops per volume

Walk Model tested in accordance with Manager & Employee & DO - number of parcels drops per volume

Each walk to have this number clearly displayed on the Frame.

If either over volume stats then walk needs assitance.

If either under volume stats then walk can absorb

It really needs to be black and white like this, all this frustration every day does no-ones arteries any good. It is also an argument stopper.

There cannot be a solution to this because we all work at different speeds, some of us are faster indoors, and some are faster outdoors, no walk is the same, no day is the same, and very often on Van deliveries partners are not the same.
How can any manager ever sit in an office in the morning, many of whom are not even situate in the delivery office (ie Sub Offices) and state that someone is able to complete the work.

agreed there can be no completely accurate system to what can be completed as the variables are huge. The best system is for clocking in and out machines and for managers to actually monitor who comes back to the office early and send those back out with extra work.

I don't think the Managers attitude to cutting off is the problem. Our biggest problem is the fact that some off our workmates are willing to sh.t on their collegues, and carve the walks up.
If everyone did the job at a reasonable pace, and with good delivery practice, the Managers wouldn't have the ammo to fire at us.
How many of us that cut off, are told that their rest day cover manages to complete on a regular basis?

We have a new manager at our orifice who seems to think I'm a docket baron. Where he got this idea from is anyone's guess. He even rang me while I was out delivering today to ask me to cover part of another walk. I had to spell it out that I'm not interested in o/t. Lol, he said oh yeah you told me that earlier  I work 3 days a week for a reason, to not be there as much, simples.
