Contract renewal
I've been in the job for just over a year now. Anyway when I was approaching six months I got a letter saying I had another six months contract. I've had nothing lately regarding a new contract. Anyone know the score?

i don't mind the part time bit its not having a permanent contract that's annoying as you feel you could be ditched at any time

Re: Contract renewal
I have just got OPG'd (permanent) after 20 months. I was similarly always worrying about how long it would last, but long-timers always told me not to worry as they'd never seen them get rid of anyone reliable and decent. Before OPG I had contracts for varying periods, sometimes was without one for 2 months, sometimes received one that expired literally 2 weeks after signing it as it was backdated etc. Just carry on and bear in mind you're approaching the busiest 7-month period for a while, what with Christmas then the New Year junk campaigns followed by the general election next spring.

Re: Contract renewal
part-timers on contract renewals can always get in touch with your area reps, once the area rep has enough
part-time staff wanting to know when they will be made up to a full-time contract he will pass on the information
to the area guvnor and he will do f.a.
give it a couple of years and there will be know full-timers left, but dont let union headquaters know about this or they may panick and suddenly remember they may not be able to pay the political funds to the labour party.
and by the way if you are on a part-time contract join the union atleast there something to fall back on in troubled times.

I am in the union but if your contracts up and they decide not to renew surely their isn't much the union can do about it?north london driver wrote: and by the way if you are on a part-time contract join the union atleast there something to fall back on in troubled times.

Re: Contract renewal
you could still have a word with your rep if you have a decent sickness record plus had no problems in your job,i am sure he will put in a good word for you to your guvnor its worth trying. good luck with the contract.Justanotherstar wrote:I am in the union but if your contracts up and they decide not to renew surely their isn't much the union can do about it?north london driver wrote: and by the way if you are on a part-time contract join the union atleast there something to fall back on in troubled times.

Indeed it does: Page 10 of AFG2014 http://www.cwu.org/assets/_files/docume ... _final.doc" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Employees will not be employed on a temporary contract exceeding two years unless it has been agreed by the Employer and the Union that there are very exceptional circumstances. The position of temporary contract Employees will be kept under regular review, with a view to converting to permanent contracts where and when possible.

Re: Contract renewal
ive been told by our DOM theres at least 20 staff in our office that are still on temporary contracts. some have been temporary for at least 3 years when they brought in park n loop
however he said that they would only be made permanent if the office can save over 100 hours a week. Now, is there any staff out there that will work for nothing just so we can have these elusive contracts!! lol

On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

Thanks. At least it seems our new DIM has given credence to the agreement as only those less than a year are now on FTC's. I think it's time the 2+ year people pointed this agreement out to their rep and had some action initiated. Often it's just ignorance or laziness by the DIMs so a reminder wouldn't go amiss.

Re: Contract renewal
So basically if you all lost up to 5 hours a week the DIM would actually sanction 20+ OPG contracts? That sounds like what happened here on a smaller scale. They are indeed being pressured into efficiency savings resulting in OPG contracts on less than your usual hours. All our DIM does is tell us to work as before, and we sign a daily OT sheet for the difference much to the annoyance of the office woman who (quote) said "why couldn't they just keep the f*cking new contracts the same?"
