We had 2 last year in an office over 3 floors, since 1 went into management thats increased to an average of 2 per section (5 sections). Their main tasks are puppy walking new entrants, investigating complaints/errors and low level counselling if required. Yes they all do delivery work.

Basically its cheap mini-me managers and in my opinion they are setting them up to become team leaders when/if the management cull happens. The managers that are pushing them are either supremely confident they'll survive the cull, trying to speed up their VR pay off, or very naive.

our office set 4 new work place coaches on about 3 to 4 months ago. they dont seem to do any extra work , dont do any overtime yet they get an extra 30 quid a week i am told.

Ours is the PHG (or whatever his new title is)... Gets the £30 a week yet hasn't ever trained anyone up, what few new starters we've had just get trained up by which ever postie they're going to be working with or covering.

A Workplace Coach whose main place of work is the Caller's Office is going to find it difficult if there is no cover for him to come out of the office and coach new entrants. However, you can guarantee they will get cover if the DOM can buck-pass any responsibility for kicking ass down to the Workplace Coach.

The way I was told on my WPC course was we were being put into the office to stop managers using mistakes as a tool for going down the conduct road,main problems are numerous & probably are national,vans in shite state,frames not clear,P739's not filled in correctly,door stepping etc.
It works in our office,but the coach needs to decent,not a wannabe manager,we have a quiet word,if it happens again we then coach & make it know that they are on the radar,problem is the old hands don't/won't listen,the new starts get taught the wrong way,or don't get taught at all
But if it saves one person from getting hassled over a matter that can be easily stopped then it's a good thing
BTW I only agreed to do the course because the level of training that the new starts are getting is a joke

TBH i pretty much agree with dados. Im the coach and no way am i a manager! I see my role as stopping people getting into trouble, with a quiet word if things arent being done correctly. Obviously some people just wont listen, but i try my best and if they dont want to listen, thats there lookout. I also get some minor admin to do. My office is overall quite relaxed, and i can see that in a different enviroment it could be a more taxing role.Any duties you are given as a coach are only to be performed in your normal hours so if anything exceptional was to come up with regards to training, adjustments would have to be made to my delivery or OT paid for me to complete.
