So here's the situation. Ive been at RM for just over a year now, started on 20hrs but was made up to 30 in the last revision. Our office has 6 PT walks so i was really luck to get a round i picked 2nd which makes me the 2nd most senior 30 man. Anyway we now have 5 walks up for grabs including my van share duty, i know i will not get a FT walk as we have about 10-15 reserves but there might be a chance to get made upto FT.
The upside is i get FT money and dont have to worry about doing extra to make my money up. Downside is i lose my duty which is fairly easy, i know what i'd doing everyday and who i'm out with. I hear rumors thats RM are trying to go PT contracts so part of me is thinking get a FT contract now while i can but i see the way some reserves are treated and think bulls to that. Also i really couldn't stand going out with some of the people in my office.
So what would you guys do. Take the jump to FT or stay on a nice easy PT round and have to make OT by taking 1-3 loops more a day (most days i get 2 easy loops that really only take me 40 mins longer)?

Why get stressed out going full time reserve when you have a nice PT duty with OT available (although not guaranteed)?
Being happy is the key to life.

It's a simple answer, a job is a job and a full-time, permanent job is like gold dust now, What does it matter what you do inside those full-time hours?, the pay is the key and I would respectfully suggest if you can't work with some of the others in your DO it might be time to grow up a little, this isn't school.
If Royal Mail get there way we'll all be as good as reserves shortly anyway.

Go full time, as mentioned above. That good part time walk you've got wont always be good, as revisions happen each year now. Benefit of being reserve is that you get to do some of the best walks aswell as the worst of course.

Exactly, I don't think he realises how lucky he is to have the opportunity.gary1975 wrote:Full time after only a year
Put it this way, to get a FT contract in my office you need 10+ years. There have been people waiting years for one, constantly getting screwed with pro rata BS.
Take the FT!

Re: What would you do?
Cheers for the replays.
I do know i would be lucky to get a FT position after a year. At the moment i am leaning towards going FT if offered. For all i know the DOM might replace the 5 FT with more PT. Going to speak to the DOM tomorrow to find out whats going on and just let him know that i want a FT contract. Another PT below me has been in his ear about it and even went as far as saying that none of the other people want a FT contract.
As for growing up and working with some of the people in the office. I can work with most people but some people are just scum. Got a few down my isle who with back stab their own partner it seems just for fun. One lady has stitched up 2 posties and i would say half the office wont work with here.

Re: What would you do?
Take the full-time position if you can, as you will never have another chance!!
Sure, it will be difficult to start with, working with different P&L partners on different walks in the office, but you will get used to that. You can't change the people you work with so just stick to doing the job your way. I was on a fixed walk for years and even though i knew what my days off were, i just got very bored with it.
One thing to consider is that there will always be fixed part-time vacancies in the office somewhere in the near future as even though the union suggests the balance should be 75% full time 25% part-time; its a fact of life that royal mail in the quest for saving hours will always promote part-time positions in future. You say you don't mind doing a few extra loops on delivery as overtime on top of your duty, well thats ok if you don't mind working a few hours later than everyone else and feeling the fatigue because you have to do 8 or 9 loops a day!
I would rather start earlier and do your extra hours doing indoor work rather than having to claim overtime and keeping a record of the docket that you have done every week. However, it is your decision..
