Operational needs?

Post by weary_posty »

So I've had a reserve approach me asking the question of why he doesn't get a rotating day off like the rest of the office. (I'm not a rep, but do pander our rep as he's next to useless)

His past 6 weeks have been
1. Tuesday off 2. Wednesday 3. Wednesday 4. Monday 5. Friday 6. Wednesday

If that isn't bad enough, he doesn't know his day off until the following weeks duties are put up the week before.
There are approx 10 duties vacant (not including those that are lapsed) in the office but they refuse to assign them as it makes the office more 'flexible', so we have out of 150 staff, 70-80 duties and about 30 reserves.

So this chap who is one of the senior reserves, can't sign for a job and has no chance of making arrangements ahead of time as he has no idea what he's on from one week to the next AND misses out on having a weekend off due to 'operational needs'

Now I'm fortunate enough to have a duty and a rotating day off but feel this stinks somewhat. Surely this can't be right?

I thought resourcing is supposed to be done at least 2 weeks in advance?

It's not possible/practice to give reserves a rotating day off they need to have the day off of the duty they are covering unfortunately. They are entitled to 1 in 6 or 2 in 4 Saturdays the same as everyone else if that means the dom has to pay ot to enable it happening that's his tough luck. Now it doesn't mean a reserve will get every 6th Saturday off just that it will average out to 1 in 6 over time again due to nature of what they are covering so they might need to wait 10 weeks and then get two Saturdays off in a row

Now unfortunately the agreement is only about Saturdays and not the following Monday so they are not entitled to long weekends off.

It's six weeks. With weekly resourcing meetings between manager and rep.

Unfortunately that's not the case everywhere. It's not in any national agreement about how far in advance the rota should be done

1 in 4 was the only decent thing to come out of BT 2012 insist on it as a minimum

What determines whether it's one in four or one in six?

It depends on what the office voted for during their revision

Luckily I have a rotating day off and our office works on a 1 in 6 Saturdays off.

Unfortunately for the new part timers they are not on a rotating day off and only get a 1 in 6 Sat off if they ask for it and even then most times they do not get it.

Like them though we only find out what duty we are on the Fri/Sat before the next week. But like I said I'm lucky to know what my day off will be, just not the duties I'll be on. Even then though often, come Monday changes happen without notice. I just come in and find out after throwing in the duty I thought I was on only to be told I'll be moved to another. Bit annoying but not as much as the newer staff getting shoved from office to office and having no rotating day off.

No, it depends if you had a vote. If not you're still on one in six.
