JOBS TO PHYSICAL NOW
Hi is it me or is the job to demanding on the body ,when they say the 4.5hr delivery has been trialled in other parts of the country before it was brought in did they think about the wear and tear on us posties ,its the hardest part I think in deliveries (weather, steps, hills, weights,) we should be able to claim for this like they can now for other industrial claims ,wouldn't be to bad to go out and do one walk back for your fourty mins break then go out to do other half till times up, if many agree could anything be done about the wear on our bodies ? (be nice to get regular physio sessions too )

and spare a thought for posties who have to do portering duty before delivery as well. Last week I walked about 6 hrs 15 minutes on average day as it is biggest walk in town :( (almost 5 hours)

Re: JOBS TO PHYSICAL NOW
Trouble is if you get an ailment from walking there's limited scope to rest and recover if you're FT. Walking on solid pavements/steps hammers your feet/joints more than a walk on natural ground, so it's a double whammy.

Re: JOBS TO PHYSICAL NOW
Most in our office struggle to finish the working day now.
Never used to be like that.

Re: JOBS TO PHYSICAL NOW
what must it be like for us over fifties, I struggle everyday, by the time I get home, I am absolutely shattered, unable to do anything in the afternoons, no social life, no housework(modern man!!!!) thinking of going to the very top of management/union to get the debate going on, IS IT ACCEPTABLE FOR OVER FIFTIES TO BE WORKING IN SUCH A WAY. I fully accept, it's hard for everyone, but the police and fire brigade have things in place for when you get to a certain.... SO SHOULD WE!!!!.

Re: JOBS TO PHYSICAL NOW
The union go on about working together with Royal Mail to make changes to the business so when is the health of it's workers going to be looked at. Park and loop has been in a lot of offices for a couple of years or more now and how many complaints to you read on here and hear in your offices about posties feeling physically exhausted and in pain at the end of the day. There is only so much the body can take before it starts to get aches and pains and with more and more lapsing going on that means walking longer distances and more physical work. I'm not frightened of a hard days graft but it's getting beyond a joke now, please please please CWU listen to you members and think about the health of the staff more than the health of the bank balance of the company.

Re: JOBS TO PHYSICAL NOW
All you can look at your job as now is a short term work experience. No one will be a postie for life anymore because of the physical demands involved. The company could agree an easier physical requirement but that would be at the cost of lower wages in order to incorporate more feet on the street spreading the load. We negotiated ourselves into a reasonably paid unskilled situation and are now realising that the cost to our personal lives is too high in terms of the physical demands and ensuing health problems. Royal Mail wants a fit, young and disposable workforce and are not really bothered if you have to go because you are worn out.
....but then, isn't that the aim of all employers nowadays ?

Im nearly 63, im the driver on our P?L and i have a round which has eight long drives which i do in the van, DOM has been trying to get me to walk it,as he says its quicker walking it, which i totaly disagree, i have a van so i should use it, rep is fighting DOM on it. ps loop was tested by a young 20 yearold who walks fast two years ago.

Re: JOBS TO PHYSICAL NOW
Couldn't agree more with comments above. I am physically fit and i used to be a semi-pro footballer when i was younger.Fast forward to now i am only 35 and i feel my 14 years service is coming to an end, unless things suddenly change.
My office is so understaffed now because of problems (since the walks were increased), the managers are struggling to get the walks covered, and i imagine this repeated across the country. I do still like the job, used the tools and never carried bags on my back, but still find myself in this predicament.
As osgoody says i really sympathise with the guys older than me, this is not a job long term anymore especially if you're in your 40s and 50s.
Sorry for ranting i wanted to show some solidarity with you guys and i hope one day for all our sake things improve, although i feel like we're peeing in the wind.

Re: JOBS TO PHYSICAL NOW
In our office the F/T are the drivers which mean shorter loops,so the part timers get more hammer than the full timers.norm wrote:Trouble is if you get an ailment from walking there's limited scope to rest and recover if you're FT. Re: JOBS TO PHYSICAL NOW
I'm well into my fifties and used to really like running,I've done a challenge race for one of the Army's elite regt for 5 years on the trot, however the last 2 years,I have had to miss it due to leg pains,I have just started running again now but only on a treadmill as it's easier on the legs, before this I used to run marathons and have done an event called the fan dance 2 times with weight so I'm not a lazy sod but now this job is catching up with me.paulthepostie wrote:Couldn't agree more with comments above. the job is slavery now, and they want more efficiency out of the posties..they want more savings, they live in cuckoo land....
when the whole country goes sick from complete melt down of its work force... there be a lot of mail stacking up in the system... it's just a matter of time...
