the guidelines for taking a van home

can anybody give me the guidelines for the taking home of a van,we have just started the delivery revisions,one of the drivers was assigned a van,but under the revision he lost his job and was moved to indoor staff,now because they have now stopped all private cars coming into the royal mail building,he has still been granted a van even though there are people senior to him not got as far as being issued the limited number of parking permits.he openly admits that it was not done because of the inconvenience of travelling but to save money on parking and use royal mail fuel,in so much he has now got a works car.the agreement he has is that he leaves work after disribution has finished collections takes the van home and has it back in time for deliverys need in the morning.being more junior then him i just like to know the ground rules or is it a matter of who you know

I didn't think vans were meant to be taken home at all - could be wrong though!

I dont know all the ins and outs, but distance from the office is a factor they use, the closer you live and therefore burn less fuel, the more likely you are chosen to take a van.
And yes certain offices let people take vans home, purely as many offices dont have enough parking spaces for them.

Is it commonplace for one of the conditions to be "I warrant that at all times I will be fit and able to use the vehicle or equipment. This means ensuring that I am ready for duty in a fit and alert condition and not under the influence od drink or drugs"?
I accept being READY FOR DUTY in a fit and alert condition and not under the influence of drink or drugs but see no need that AT ALL TIMES I will be fit and able to use the vehicle.
Furthermore there's no guarantee that I will be in a "fit and alert condition" towards the end of the working day.

In my office anyone can take a van home unless they live 50 miles away. Some that live 50 miles away can, as they have an agreement from when their office was closed and they got transferred. Plenty of parking in yard so that's not an issue.

Anyone can be dropped off at home at the end of their duty ( if their partner or other person agrees to of course).

Agree. What happens if the van is damaged overnight outside your house and they drive off? What happens if it's stolen? How does the day off cover get the van when your day off is the next day?

What happens if it's stolen?

The same as if your car is stolen,Ring the police and your office asap,you will be covered by insurance.These rules are all set out in the forms that you have to sign before being allowed to take the van home.
