I have a 21 hour contract over a 3 day period although my manager asks me to work 6 days more often than not. Here's the issue, the 3 days I am not contracted vary i.e. different walks and different alocated time periods to all walks in my office. My line manager seems to think hes entitled to only pay me 6hrs per shift, even though shifts vary from 5.55 hrs to 8 hrs. Last week I worked 3 days overtime which added up to 22hrs (The walk times are printed on each desk), yet I was only paid 18hrs.
What do I do from here, cut off longer walks at the 6hr mark? not come in early to sort (this is within the duty of some walks). Im stuck in a situation, if I cut off/do not sort im worried my manager will cut my overtime, I need the overtime!
I always write my start times and finish times in a diary so if ive done say 40hrs that week then ill be expected to be paid 40 hrs. If your manager is only paying you an average of 6hrs a day for your non contracted hours then you should only be working 6hrs. You need to see your union rep. Your manager cant hold you to ransom. If you are on a day that takes 8hrs then you need to book it down that you have done an 8hr shift. Your practically working a few hours for free.!!!!
Or what you need to do is come 2hrs later when its an 8hr day. Your being taken for a ride pal.
Yes thats what im getting at, I know I am working a few hours for free. Do I just get on with it and be thankful of the overtime? or refuse to do the longer walks? Like I said Im worried my overtime will get cut so I guess 18 hours is better than nothing? I have spoken to my union rep who said I should get paid exactly what is says on each walk. It's not just me this has happened too but Ive seen others get zero overtime for making a fuss.
Its up to you but then thats always gonna happen. think of this, your working say 4 hrs a week for free yeah. Taking off 4 weeks annual leave you are working 192hrs roughly for free a year at say £10 an hour thats just short of 2 grand a year your gonna be conned out of. If you dont say anything now then you never will, needs to be nipped in the bud now in my opinion. think of it like that!!!
If your manager is desperate to give hours out especially having you work 6 days a week when you are supposed to be on 3 then its pretty unlikely he is not going to give you any overtime in the future if you bring this up. Dont forget xmas is around the corner and he will be desperate for people to work.
You are entitled to pay for the number of hours you do each day in excess of your contract hours, taking account of your paid breaks.
If they want to play silly buggers offering a straight 6 hours for day off overtime, politely tell them to do one, if you expect to be working more than 6 hours including at least 30mins paid meal relief.
i too am 25hrs over 3 days, and they tried to drop our days off to 6 hours, but everyone in the office refused to come in for 6 hours and now its back to 7. sometime even 8 if they're feeling generous or desperate, if i was you if they wont budge on the 6 hours just come in for the 6 hours and don't do any extra, if when you come in it has not been prepped then its time to leave some in and only work until cut off time.

Write in the docket book the actual hours of that shift that you are working
If you are not paid what them hours are, then they are taking you for a ride. They always say if you have an issue then raise it with your line manager...so raise it with your line manager! I tend to do a lot of overtime BUT I would not work an 8 hour shift and get paid for 6; what would be the point of that??
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.
Management want us to work the hours we are paid for, so just work the hours they pay you for.
If you are working on an 8 hour day and they're only going to pay you for 6 hours, ask them what they want you to do with the 2 hours that you won't be working.
We have had posties in our DO turn up late if they are due OT and have not been paid. If they owe 2hrs for example and no sign of being paid for them then you turn up 2 hrs late one morning and explain the reason why you have done this. If they want an issue with that then you raise your issue. Dont let them walk all over you.
Ive only been a postie 18months and has started to realise no one is taking me for a ride.

That's a good idea, brings the issue to a head straight away. Banking hours is another thing they try to encourage, which I went along with for a while, but the period they wanted you to bank them over seemed to go from this week into next and had to threaten to cut off the hours owed on a Saturday. Of course I am a 20 hour contract guy who relies on overtime to get a living wage out of the job, they use this understating of hours as an intimidation tactic to try and make you work for less than others.
Just hijacking this thread in the hope someone can help - have had an interview today for a 28 hour a week contract - really want to work for Royal Mail but 28 hours not really enough - is there usually overtime available each week? The hours will be 5 weeks on one week off
