Culling = Arguments

Post by 19times »

Hello fellas

I'd just like peoples thoughts on this one please.

Here goes...

This week we had to cull because we 1. got out the office 40 mins later than usual due to heavy mail and 2. we were going to every house more or less with voting letters.

We informed the Manager after we were ready to tie up that we would have to leave 2 loops in to get done on time to which he said, nope you can't do that, leave knock ons instead  problem was the knock ons were not the issue that day, it was point 1 and 2 above.

In the end Manager said leave one loop in and take all knock ons  and we ended up going over by you guessed it the time it takes to do that loop we said we should leave in

In future is there anything we can say to him differently? We have been doing the walks long enough to know better than him what's what.

Thanks.

Bert.

Tell him next time "I'm not going to complete till I am happy with what I take out and I will be bringing stuff back at the end of the duty" Make sure your rep or a witness hears it or switch your phone on record so he cant say you never told him, leave the problem with him.

Very dangerous with you saying what you will leave, far safer to say I/we want to finish at contract time and will do as much as I/we can, but we foresee we will run out of time to complete the whole delivery.

Make the lino decide what they want to attempt, make them understand you will take that amount, but you may have to bring some back while doing your best to deliver what they asked.

What if you decide how many loops to leave and you get back early? Hiding around the corner from the depot is a dangerous game to play with this new PDA location software in place. It cannot be used for disciplinary action, but what if lino decides to jump in a van and just happens to see you parked up? :hmmmm

True

If you have finished over your time then claim excess for it

Mind you we did that a few weeks ago when it was busy that day and we didn't get the overtime because we finished earlier on another day in the week. I have heard that another lino's even checks the records (when you have signed out of your PDA usually) from the previous weeks to determine whether they will pay you the excess or not. So you can't win either way......

Best bet, is to try and take out what you can and leave the rest, but trolley is quite correct

They can't do that because there is no agreement to Bank Hours and the 30 minute flexibility is not retrospective. If you run out of work during your hours then as long as you are available for work its up to managers to provide it for you. If they let you go early then this is not part of the 30 minute flex unless its specifically stated as such.

Thanks for that true blue

It didn't happen to me, it happened to the colleague i've been working with this week.

He told me he is fed up of his duty - which is one of the worst in the section i have to say. He said he did not want to take out his extra loop on the collapse because he knew he wouldn't be finished in time. Thats when the lino showed him the times in the previous weeks as to when he has logged out of his PDA, as an example that the duty was not as bad as it looked.

I didn't think he could force him to work the extra lapsing based on what has happened in previous weeks

The old area manager used to quote a full USO must be done, so no loops are left, but a whole walk is covered. What he meant was that you had to stream the mail. Is streaming a national agreement, or just sumat he's made up? Or can you leave whole loops if you feel you will run out of time. Xmas is approaching you see, and I won't be going over for no fooker.

I've told them I could not complete the delivery and they said I was wrong so now they tell me what to take and if I run out of time I bring it back.
They seem relatively happy now they know I won't budge on the matter and tend to under-estimate what I have to take for fear of mail returning to the office with only themselves to deliver it.

the USO is Royal Mails obligation, not the postmans. The postmans obligation is to work their agreed contracted hours. The managers job is to ensure the USO is achieved.
Not sure what you mean by streaming mail and how this is done ?

Streaming = take all 1st class and enough of the other garbage to take you to your time while covering the whole walk.

Streaming is not agreed in fact it shouldn't be happening.

From and LTB in 2010 but its still valid as no agreement has been made since:
Dear Colleagues,

During the recent ADR briefings the subject of ‘Streaming or Skimming’ of mail was raised by a number of reps and subsequently raised by me at the NDG. Royal Mail’s response was that they were unaware of it and it was only anecdotal, they needed firmer ‘evidence’. Therefore could reps please supply the dept via email with any instances where this has occurred or is occurring, naming the office and the manager of the office and how frequently this has occurred, and how the streaming actually occurs. In some cases the decision of what not to deliver has been left to OPGs which in itself is unacceptable. In other instances it forms part of absorption/lapsing where an OPG is taken off a delivery to allow others to absorb the delivery by only delivering the 1c and leaving everything else in the frame.
Your urgent attention and response to this request would be greatly appreciated.

Please send your replies to bgibson@cwu.org no later than Thursday 11th November 2010.

Thanks
