Maybe a silly question regarding meal relief?

Why only 40mins? In other walks of life/jobs an 8hr day would constitute a full 1 hour meal relief. If the answer is obvious no need to destroy me!

IIRC the law says 20 mins break for every 6 hours you work

That's a minimum of course so that's what RM give you

Agreed my call centre job was 8 hrs long and that didn't include an unpaid 30 minute meal break at 1pm.

Very few jobs pay you to do nothing these days, makes you wonder why so few actually take it really.

A subject that's been chewed over for decades and people still won't take them. My advice is just make sure you take yours and let the others just get on with it.

In my opinion this will be the next thing to go. After all, how can a company with shareholders justify paying out for meal reliefs, that only a minority use ?
Why not just fall in line with the majority of companies and provide an unpaid break, and at the same time save themselves over £30 a week per fulltimer ?
Or they could keep the wage the same and add another 40 minutes to the end of the duty time ............

I used to take my meal relief religiously , but our canteen died when second deliveries stopped and couple that with later start and finish times , myself and a lot of my colleagues in my office are walking a tightrope to be done in time kicking out time at school so we just take them at the end of the shift . Not ideal I know but needs must

We get 1 hr in the MC payed so I go into the gym and if you think about it I'm getting payed for doing something I enjoy happy days.

Thanks for all your feedback. Interesting to note that some people do get an hour. 40 mins doesn't seem long enough to me, especially when there is no canteen and 1 microwave between 120 people is just comical.

The length of your meal relief is governed by the length of your duty time.
