Just to get your thoughts


We have been told to kill off schools mail during the summer hols instead of keeping it back like we used to.


Our office has apparently sent all the schools/colleges in the area that unless they pay for a keepsafe for those weeks, then we are quite within our rights to kill off all their mail.

Have noticed that schools have been trying to get round this by saying that the caretakers are in to collect the mail. And they are not always there!! Damn I used to look forward to not delivering to schools during the summer...

Royal Mail are saying that as a commercial business that schools have to pay just like anyone else and that if we hold the mail back we are still liable if anything goes missing during the six weeks..

We have been told this too. But what's the difference between school holidays and Saturdays? We hold their mail then, no problem. Moving the goal posts again. Managers trying to throw their weight around.

Never saw a problem with putting the mail in a box and saving it until the schools returned. We've also been told to kill off mail which doesn't have a keep Safe....We've also been delivering to the Caretaker (at the schools request). I know we're a business and in it for the money, however as a colleague pointed out...... Where's the money for the Keep Safe going to come from? The Schools are government run, and they still have a big stake in RM, so are we charging ourselves to look after the mail?

IMHO It's petty and makes more work for the Postie than simply putting it in a box for a later single deliver.

I thought no access mail which would be the case for a closed school is tried 18 times before killing off? So you would only kill off the mail that is 19 days old and I can imagine you would loose track unless you date every piece you bring back.

I don't believe it was RM but Ofcom who clearly pointed out to RM that they could not treat 1 customer differently and so RM had no choice. The schools on the other hand could institute a call and collect during the summer holidays if any of them could be arsed to pick it up once a week

I'm getting a lot of kids' holiday drawings sent to their school so would be a shame to kill it off, luckily workers are still there keeping access open, if I had to kill it off , I do have some teachers on my duty who would take it. Petty again and makes us look greedy.

Ffs, what idiots decide this kind of thing. I'm pretty sure schools provide a large amount of our business over the country as ive seen how much mail they can sometimes get. Yeah they shut over the summer but a bit of common sense should be used. And anyway it aint gonna be the clown who decided to do this that the school will be asking on their return where is all the mail?.

The schools won't be asking where there mail is unless they are a bit thick.
We yell them we will no longer provide a free keepsafe. They need to make appropriate arrangements.

I think its very petty that we don't hold the mail for them. I can imagine someone from a competitor going to the schools and saying use our mail service and we will hold your mail until the return of school.....
In our DO we hold the mail for half term so what the difference????

The official line as been to rts school mail for several years now if a Keepsafe is not in place. The fact that 99% of it is then held for free in anycase (probably because no one could be arsed to kill it off) is the reason why many schools don't put a keep safe in, a call your bluff if you like.
