Porters and Sorters

Soon to start the new porters and sorters system (WCM) Just curious to see if many other offices have tried it and if so does it work? Looking at what's been proposed I can't really see how it is more efficient?

Porters - another crap idea someone has come up with to save a few measly seconds. If you work in a small office you will hardly notice any efficiency improvement. But bigger offices may see a difference. If you are a porter expect to have a bit of abuse hurled at you

Do what we do in our office shout out the walk twice to clear out no third chance, put it all in a box wollop it on the floor. Managers start scratching their heads then "Where has this come from" leave it with them. Works in our office.

One of our villages which has 3 posties,van share and one solo.All 3 used to do ips and prep their own walks,Now,one of the 3 is the porter while the other 2 stay to prep their own walks.Result= 3 less men on the ips and no extra hours put on the ips to make up for it,great idea!!

The porters get a raw deal.

They sometimes get harassed to clear bulging pigeon holes when they might be in the middle of taking mail round to a frame. They do a lot of bending and lifting and carrying. When the sorting has finished the sorters know immediately and start clearing their pigeon holes but the poor old porters might have several trays of mail still to deliver to frames, so the porters are often slightly behind on their prep.

I've noticed that some people never do portering, even if a regular porter is off sick or on leave. The manager doesn't like to move the senior guys from their sorting so usually a more junior bod has the honour of doing the portering. Basically as a porter you're bottom of the pile.

It is a joke, we were waaaaay more efficient before they implemented the new system of backless frames and porters. Oh and the worst part was they took away the coffins due to H&S and now were using yorks for our parcels, and you have to empty the packet sack onto the frame or floor to sort them out.

it started this week in our office. went badly. manager told us to stay on our frames no matter what. I was the last walk to receive anything. 4 boxes at 8.45 full of small and flats. normally I would collect mail from ips twice. some people do it every 2 mins collecting only 5 - 6 items each time.

Once WCM is implemented those who prep the walks at least on paper have no time allocated to clear the boxes so who are you shouting at exactly?
If it was me you wouldn't get to the "third chance".

If you have an issue over resourcing try bringing it up with your rep who can then bring it up with management, shouting out walk numbers and expecting those guys to stop what they are doing and come running is pointless and could be construed as bullying and harassment if targeted at certain individuals.

I'll second that! Most double-preppers work more minutes/hours than the IPS/Packets folks, all we ask is for someone to collect up around them when the pigeon holes are full and bring it round so that we can get on with struggling to prep 2 walks.

We should not really need official porters except for big offices; if only people are reasonable and not so selfish. However IPS people just want to get short - clear out as quickly as possible; so they do not want to move from the IPS at all (and those are the good sorters). Some just chuck them anywhere - as usual, just to finish early, again.

And the managers allow them to go to the frame even when others are struggling to double prep. Even when managers themselves are still prepping - it happens in my office all the time. Some managers are just too weak!

When I am on IPS I get bored after a while and actually do like to stretch my legs by collecting up and taking mail to colleagues; some who are struggling. the same with packets - I hate lifting heavy packet bags off the frame; so I do not let them get too full unlike some of my colleagues.

*Anyway, collecting up and putting the mail in a box is a good thing. At least the postie can come later and simply pick up a box instead of going round pigeon holes.

the porters in ours now also have to lay the mail out on ips frames for sorters , clear down ips , and then prep pt road as well as their own f***ing slavery

Hey don't forget preppers! The whole post revision system is stupid, it's been a year since our revision and I wouldn't have a clue if I was asked to do the IPS.
Our DOM done the portering once and was sweating after 15 minutes.
