what does it come to when your own colleagues stitch you up?
I'm PT and currently got a hard but decent duty with a good oppo, but been chasing the golden goose of FT hours for years, merely so i can have a well earned rest day and not having to work it to make ends meet.

a FT duty got advertised which i stood a "better than fair" chance of getting because nobody wants to work with him/her (ex-line manager)
even a FT postie of 20+years said he'd go for the duty which is easy compared to other duties but declined it but for working with him/her, and I've walked it and it is easier.

but i thought, what the hell, extra £55 ish p/w & full holiday pay & already told him/her won't take the pi55 out of me like the others , which is common knowledge due to numerous ex-partners who are either on the sick, sacked or moved on for threatening to chin him/her
anyway, he/she actually applied for the duty themselves already been FT to be paired with the same duty, thus doing me or if any PT above me in seniority who applied out of a FT wage, & they knew I'd put in for it to boost my wages?

just can't get my breath!

May sound stupid but wouldn't you still be part-time but on that walk? There are no PT walks at my DO. The PT staff just come in later and part of their walk is thrown in.

Aside from that, not meaning to sound harsh, the guy may not have a walk at the moment and could be his only chance of one for a while. If he has been there longer than anyone else who wants it he should be allowed it.

Surely if he/she gets the duty they should then put his/hers duty on the board so who ever gets it will end up paired with him/her anyway but on the opposite duty if that makes sense.?

odds on it will become a PT duty due to the cuts

he/she has had the "other half" of the duties for ages and is safe due to seniority,
they then applied for the other duty paired with their own duty which makes no difference to his/her daily workload but as robbed the chance of me or if the next highest in seniority,
and he/she knew i wanted FT hours as i told them but they still swapped!

I think another poster has probably come up with why this colleague might be applying for the post...

It could be that management wants to reduce hours by changing a duty from FT to PT: and as most of offices have a FT/PT combo, it will not be unusual. This postie might have been informed by management of that particular scenario...

You can turn around and say why dont they just make the advertised post a PT post - all I say is that all duties are not the same - the prep times and frame layout might sway people? So, he/shemight might actually be moving sideways instead of the scenario above or stitching you up.

The other thing to consider is that a particular walk might be highlighted for lapsing - and this ex-manager might have some inside knowledge.

I've a couple of mates at work,but most would sell their mothers to get ahead.You have only to read some of the post's on this forum to see the calibre of people.

they didn't gain anything though, already paired with the duty and already full time.
when they advertise the other duty and probably be reduced to part time they will have done someone out of being made up to full.

Theres quite a few in my place that would drop you in it if it means getting ahead, I've had one dobbing me in pretending to say I was slow and couldn't do the job in front of the whole office on the platform knowing my manager was in earshot, who tugged me in about it, I pointed out that you shouldn't believe all you hear especially from him. I also put in a grievance about it. you have to stand your ground otherwise you will get walked over.

There is many that will stab you in the back if it means getting ahead. The only way to help yourself unfortunately is to look after Number 1, cover your arse at all times.

korky even if you had applied and got that duty youd still be p/t. its always been like that. whenever a f/t leaves, they will put the duty up but they wont replace a f/t with a f/t. its much cheaper for them to replace with a p/t even if they will work full time hours. it saves them on holidays sick and pension plus they know every p/t wants f/t hours (almost everyone). in our office since our revision from just over a year ago, we have had around 4 full timers leave. and they havnt even been replaced by part timers. every part timer in our office but for 2 or 3 is working full time hours. you simply have to just accept that or stage a protest and work your hours (and get all the other part timers to do same) but that will never happen

i or whoever was the next in line would get made up to 39 hrs if currently lower

and you believe him? it would be on a temp basis and there trying to get rid of all the temp full times back down to part time. sorry but your manager does not have the power to offer full time contracts. its up to his manager and possibly the one above. we have never had anyone made up to full time when replacing a fulltimer.only a couple and they were the old driving duties
