new opening hours callers office sunday

just been told by my line manager and cofirmed by my union rep that the callers office where i work will be opening sundays 12.00 till 4.00 pm.i am also informed that it will be manned by volunteers on s/a.now there used to be a time at royal mail that sunday was double time.not any more.also i raised the question about if there are no volunteers how would it be manned and could not get a straight answer surprise!!.it has been rumoured and rumour like gossip is currency within the royal mail that we already working in there will have to work 1 in 3 or 1 in 4 depending on how many work in there,but if we are attatched to delivery surely everybody should have to take a turn or are we to be discriminated against.will keep everybody informed as things move on.(which with the size of our office at 2 people a week if i do it first then my next time should be in 2018)

Yes I heard the same this week, Sunday working in the Callers office but it would only make sense if the volume of packets was there or that Sunday deliveries was done at the same time. With the advent of leave the item with a neighbour it has cut down on the returns. If it's on SA we've seen that before on Saturday and what a disaster that was.

Leave it at neighbours and Amazon gone , is it not worth opening sunday now ? We have 70 deliveries and dailey we are 50 returned packets down than used to be . Currentley we hold about 600 items in callers office. What would be staff level on sunday ?

An employee can opt out of Sunday working at any time, even if they have agreed to work on Sundays in their contract.

The employee must give their employer 3 months’ notice that they want to opt out of Sunday working. They must continue to work on Sundays during the 3 month notice period if their employer wants them to.

An employer who needs staff to work on Sundays must tell them in writing that they can opt out. They must do this within 2 months of the person starting work - if they don’t, only 1 month’s notice is needed to opt out.

I don't think so, I was told there was a list. Originally London area but now the trial has become wider - we all deliver parcels after all and not everyone lives in Lunnun. It commences first week of September.

In a DO, staff had enough from monday to saturday....no one wants to work on sunday .. how the hell they will open Callers Office on sunday ? safty reason it will have to be staff of 2 !!

thankyou to trueblue terrier for putting me right as regards sundays,the only thing i cannot remember is if sunday is in my contract circa 1980,its the small print that the management dont tell you about in case they have to end up doing the job themselves,once this is in there will be no going back and the younger lads if not in the union or take up the baton learn from the union leaders and stand their ground rm will walk all over them.

our office is one of the hundred trial offices to be used in opening on sundays from 7/9 12.00 to 16.00.there will be no turning back now.how long before they open longer on saturdays and sunday to appease the share holders.hopefully it will be when ive finished.we have got the volunteers at the moment,but they will be expected to book items in as well as serve,since the new way of working came in the manager turns up every day to ask us why jobs were left,while at the same time not covering people when they are on a/l and s/l.the usuall manager speak is do what you can,you do but its still not good enough.
