Any voluntary redundancies in your area?

Was told today that Royal Mail have put aside a lump sum of money to payout for this and that it's nationwide, in the next few months. Apparently there after more people to do it than in the past 10 years plus that I have been here, and it's regardless of seniority.

Is something seriously wrong going on here? (ie the recent massive share price drop), or call me cynical or is it a case of getting rid of us old timers to replace with (eventually) zero hour fully compliant and fearful worker?.

Your experiences and thoughts?.

Have not heard anything in our area but can imagine if it was offered there would be a mass stampede of posties wanting redundancy

So far, Mail Centres only ..... no delivery office .. yet !!

Just been for a pint with a retired former RM colleague (ahh the joys of retirement!), he says his sister-in-law and her husband, both delivery posties have been told that there will be 20 VRs on offer at their DO.

They are both in their 50's, physically knackered, have had enough and want to get out. If it is offered he would probably get VR, but she probably is not senior enough as a lot of people in their DO want to go.

I'd say that is perfect timing for voluntary redundancies. What a great time to go, just before the madness starts and a chance to enjoy Christmas for once.

This isn't aimed at anyone on here but I think there is a lot of bravado about when people say they want VR. I've noticed one or two in our office starting to back track a little now that it is looking more likely that VR could happen.

I filled out the preference form that was sent to me earlier this year, I asked for Vr, Do you think it makes any difference or will Rm go by office seniority?
Most of the senior bods in my office have said they're not going, but if they change their minds does the preference form I filled in mean nothing?

I get what you are thinking, but it is also a double edged sword in a way thereby putting even more pressure on those who are left, if VR's are done and dusted before Christmas Pressure!

Should you leave you need to find another job, great if you have one lined up, mind not many jobs pay as well as for unskilled work.

Or if you are over 55 and will get sufficient pension to live on. A lot of my former colleagues were just waiting to reach 55 and get EVR with pension. One regretted not being old enough to get EVR when it was available at 50 a few years ago. He is now hoping to get it at 55, and fears that the goalposts will be moved again.
Others were waiting to get their pension at 60 then hopefully get the maximum 104 weeks VR.

If there are 20 VRs on offer that must be one hell of an overstaffed office at 39 hours a pop is almost 800 hours a week times that by just 42 weeks and you have a terrific saving from just one DO.
