It should. But it doesn't always happens.

He'll need to bit the bullet if he wants absolute confirmation, or he could just wing it after the contract end date. If they continue to employ him beyond the contract end date then he will get the same rights (notice period, leave, redundancy, unfair dismissal etc) as a permanent employee with the same amount of time served. That means in essence they have to give the same amount of notice as they would a permanent employee - that's 2 weeks notice.

As he has not received a confirmation letter that his employment has been terminated I would wait until the duties for the following week have been listed in his " last" week and his name does not appear that would be the time for concern.
