no confidence

this is a tricky one but for the last 3 years we have had no local rep in our office and the divisional rep wants nothing to do with us .
we have only seen him 3-4 times in those 3 years and he only turns up to back up changes being made by royal mail.
one of my colleagues wishes to lodge a vote of no confidence against him but we have no idea who to contact to do this.
can anybody help us out with some information please.

if you haven't got a local rep, your next port of call is your area rep. rightly or wrongly, if your without a local rep the representation you receive will be poorer than those with.

To be brutally frank a vote of no confidence against an Area Delivery Rep is pointless. (which is the grade I think you mistakenly called a Divisional Rep, they are one stage higher up).

For a Vote of no confidence to work you need a minimum of 50% of their electorate, not just 50% of your office.

This is in fact one of the concerns raised by some members. In a Geographically challenged area an incumbent rep, who perhaps has less than altruistic motives to say on full time release, may, and I reiterate MAY, decide to concentrate on the large offices, where they can protect their voter base. I know its not happening with my ADR, but for those less concerned about Union values the temptation to do just enough may be too much of a siren to ignore.

Unfortunately, there is no mechanism within the CWU structure to address this issue, in fact its fair to say some do not believe there is an issue to be concerned about. I personally think it would be better to have a process and checks in place to address/catch issues before they become a concern as over the long run the damage to the Union would be less.

If you and others are concerned with workplace matters that are not being addressed through the union why not set up a local committee? Therefore, the decision making process on issues is shared... however, someone still has to challenge the big bad boss when necessary...

Lets face it this union business has been a gentleman's club for a very long time - you take the national figure of MC v DO and in a national ballot the DO holds sway BUT in local union elections the MC is going to elect the Area and Div reps because they are much easier to speak to en masse and DOs are disregarded making the CWU a busted flush.
