In our office we have 100 deliveries, 5 are being lapsed for 90 of the jobs. The other 5 are excused because their jobs are too big or they're slower than the others.

Now, in the quiet period another 5/6 jobs are looking set to be lapsed...

The Runners will continue to run and the Early Birds will always start at 5/5.30 (maybe earlier now)


It's putting jobs at risk and putting pressure on the slower posties for not completing or going over.


Lots of arguements on both sides.

"I have to get back to pick the kids up from school"
"I can't help it if I'm faster than the slower ones"
"I work an hour earlier so it's only fair I finish earlier"


What's the solution? Management will do sweet FA as it's making the office figures look good.

I still maintain a start time of 5/5.30 would help. No one in their right mind would come in at 4! Especially if their sequenced mail isn't in!
We'd all get out earlier and finish by 1pm.

the answer is simple everyone works to the finish time on their contracted hours + ot and sa for those that want it, thats the time they are paid until so thats the time they should work to, if they do a round faster by running then good on them, gives them more time to take some more of the lapsed time out, people need to start looking out for others rather than number one

The ridiculous thing is, the runners and early birds will not have more added on because the DOM is happy they are making his figures look good. Why rock the boat?

Why doesnt the Union grow a back bone and enforce something? It's a subject that's always cropping up!

I'm only in my twenties and can comfortably rush around like a looney but just do not see the point. Yes I won't get home an hour or 2 early but I'm also not going to have dodgy knees come my 40s

In our DO the answer is to let the managers manage.

The early birds do more prepping of the lapsed duties. The runners deliver the bigger chunks/loops to be lapsed.
Those on trolley duties get to throw in D2Ds as their "extra bit". The managers deliver some lapsing on busy days.
Managers greet those returning to the DO well before their finish time with a "little extra delivery or sorting" before they can go home.
Sometimes they will message everyone regarding which duties need help completing on time.
The managers pay agreed overtime when the workload demands it and cut-off procedures are nearly always followed properly.

There's often questions about fairness particularly as more and more duties are lapsed. Some arrangements seem to be more flexible as a result.
In conclusion, let the managers manage!

This has been going on in our office wayyyyyyyyyyyy too long,the idiots are still coming early we are now on our 3rd lot of lapsing yes that's right 3rd lot,the first lot of lapsing was added to our frames,last year another 9 duty's was lapsed and we have recently lapsed another 5 duty's,the reps have been banging on to use the trolleys and do the job properly,hardly anybody listens and yet moans like feck about lapsing.......it has got that bad that our reps invited BOB GIBSON to come to the office that was 2 years ago and he finally came came this week along with a Royal Mail director Burgess.

You would have thought that with all the whining going on that there would be loads of people talking to these two and whilst a few did most of the office was `busy` putting their heads down as they are scared of the bullyboy running the show(DOM) and waiting for the daily stampede to get out the shithole to begin,the upshot of this was the DOM shamed into coming in the next day at 6 o'clock to send people home who turn up early...the next day he wasn't doing it as it was a Saturday neither did any of his minions so back to normal it is.
I feel sorry for the two lads who do the reps jobs they get no support off the vast majority of the members,they are far too busy looking after themselves and backstabbing everybody else,the only two lads who use the trolleys in our office don't do ANY lapsing as they have no time,the dumb f***s at ours moan about them not doing any lapsing and then when the latest `summer lapsing` came in just came in even earlier,talk about brain dead!
My general impression of the visit off the bigwigs was that they STILL think everything is hunky dory in our office because it suits BOTH parties and I can see nothing changing at all.
I'd love to know what the answer is as well because the members are not feckin interested in working their hours they want to finish early and feck the consequences.

Couldn't some sort of agreement be put into place where the company is only liable for our safety during contracted hours?

Would your DOM be happy to risk an injury to an employee an hour before start then?

They should make everyone return to the office and give them lapsing according to how much time they have left.
That'll stop the runners/early starters.

There is an easy way for management to stamp this kinda s**t out and get a realistic look at what can and can't be done regarding workloads on any given day. There is a set time for departing the office. Ensure it is enforced. If that then results in cut-offs then so be it. People coming in early so they can fly out the door, sometimes before part-timers have even entered the building and have no/ hardly and letters in their frames is ridiculous and should not be happening, but it does on a daily basis - and from what I understand, up and down the land.

I can't understand it use your trolley and no lapsing come in early carry and loads of lapsing I know I would be using a trolley are these people worried about their jobs? Or just like doing extra work?
