Union Reps becoming RM managers ???

Post by postslippete »

Surely a contradiction??

But no, the new DOM at our office used to be a Union Rep in our office a few years ago. And i've heard that one of our current Reps is now undertaking management training...

I understand that management and Unions are more closely working together with the new agreements and I suppose the two most important factors of being in a Union is that they can protect workers pay and save jobs, but at what expense?? In our office, everything is veered towards management aims on indoor efficiency and lapsing more and more deliveries. We lapse every day, every week with just two weeks off at Xmas. Last tuesday in our section we collapsed 6 duties. Our job is being de-valued. The wage rises and pay increases are minimal when you consider how much extra we are expected to work so real wages are lower.

In a meeting last week the Rep suggested along the lines that we should all "work smarter" by taking on the extra work if we want to stay in work. Its just a pity he doesn't practice what he preaches because he never did any "extra" himself, he just worked smarter by working to his time. Mind you, the managers do look after him with indoor work (whilst every other mug thats in a Union has to work 4 or 5 hours in 25 degree heat). :arrrghhh

Maybe we should all become Union Reps, and then we can all achieve World Class Mail!!
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

does "extra work mean working your basic week paid hours or unpaid overtime?

Here we go again. The only thing you make in this job is time, so if you can make time, make it!

Reps that become gaffers are just as bad as strike breakers in my eyes :cuppa

those days are going going gone, you make the odd half hour but they want £ for £ now.
our d/o is in turmoil, cuts & cuts, rumours of short term staff losing their jobs, no overtime then managers prepping/walking it,
union rep refuses to block it, told him 3 times this week and nothing done, union has zero influence now,
come monday, that £200ish per year in subs will be stopped

here is the problem, if you have the capacity to do extra in your duty time what's the problem, if you don't then you don't

what if like my oppo & me, we take pride in delivering the service and "willing" to do extra to complete most days,
our onion rep as proved he doesn't give a s**t about us by allowing the managers to "mop up" the excess!
protecting jobs? our reps & members are losing them

Being part-time I am effectively on minimum wage as overtime has disappeared

not sure how you are on min wage unless you were "promised" loads of O/T and now living on 20+ish hours, the pay rate remains the same.
here there is massive cull brewing, the "runners" are oblivious and probably safe anyway so they're not bothered about others, our rep used to be very militant towards those above, but now in their pocket
but does nothing to protect our jobs, he'll quite happily stand and watch a manager prep/walk a duty to cut the overtime despite my protests.
but so many get "looked after" and are on different rules nothing will get done
hence no onion subs = an extra holiday

It's £10 an hour because for any less they can deliver the crap themselves. Not many of us here would do the job for long on minimum wage after the abuse we get.

And both RM AND the CWU know this so I'm not sure the CWU deserve all the credit for the pay.
