anyone think that if we went back to our 5 o clock start times would be better for competing against our competitors, being out on the streets meeting house holders before they go to work with there pkts , beating the heat , moral going up with finishing the day at a better time ,

Yes, of course. The sheer pointlessness of going out at 9AM+ and seeing about 2/3 of recordeds, specials and signed-for tracked come back plus about 40% of packets is apparent to all. If logistically possible, the times should be revised.

With processing centres covering so many depots these days, only practical way depots could resort to old start times would be get collection cut-off times moved forward, so processing and logistics could happen earlier.

IMO the time for prepping D2D should be allocated for the end of the duty, i.e. when you come back to the office after completing the walk, you prep the next day's D2D in the empty frame. Sure it will only save 10-30 mins (depending on the volume of D2D) but it's something at least.

Ideally more pre-starts/night staff would sort the problem out. Sequenced mail only seems to be getting heavier (or is it me? ). Additional night duties could help prep sequence trays and packet sorting. Who am I kidding though, it won't happen.

Don't think the early starts will ever happen to be honest those days are well and truly in the past.
Think Royal Mail should have an affordable before 9 a.m service, that isn't first class. To cater for all those that want to be caught before they go to work but don't want to pay a fortune for it.

Probably no point in that as the bulk of the mail arrives after 02:00 in MCs so you'd still get loads of packets later and the sequenced mail won't go out to DOs any earlier due to the time it takes to sequence it. How long will it be before RM start to axe all runs to DOs before 06:00 to save night rates for drivers.

In our office we now do collections both Monday and Saturday. Collections now take out a lapsed round in the early afternoon to deliver between them. We double-lapse every day. Sometimes we come in to find out first tray of mech thrown off by the night staff. Something's got to give soon.

Yeah but it's probably a neighbour dropping off the day before's mis-delivered mail.
