been informed i have cancer....

without going into finer details for now I am just wondering where I stand with Royal Mail and what support if any I will get from the company now I know for sure I do indeed have cancer?(And I am hoping from the Union too as I will be looking to them like never before for help and support not only for me but my kids should the worst happen).
Been off work for a few weeks already with a separate issue and also some
painful cancer investigations/biopsies which my gaffers are well aware of...my main worry is that as I need more treatment and time off in the future will Royal Mail issue stage warnings each time I have treatment ultimately meaning I might get the sack (I am not on any stages currently)..or because I have already informed my manager I am currently undergoing cancer treatment/investigations will they will be more lenient and hopefully sympathetic to my condition both now and in the immediate future?
I am also in two minds whether to stay off sick (continuous absence) in order that I can have treatment for the cancer over the coming weeks/months..or go back on possible light duties(and get OH/Atos involved again who are also aware of my cancer issues) and just take time off whenever I have to go in for treatment which I have been warned will be painful/debilitating and mean I will need further time off work to recuperate each time I am seen.
Looking for guidance here guys...any help would be very much appreciated.(As you can see I am a pretty open minded person and do not believe in keeping things a secret. Like to get things out in the open and to tackle problems head on)..thank you.

From the point of diagnosis you are covered by the Equality Act and as such all absences connected to your condition should be discounted from the attendance procedure.
Most DOMs are clueless. Your Branch should have a disability officer and it may be worth getting in touch with them to ensure there are no "misunderstandings"
The wonderful Linda Roy at CWU HQ is always worth contacting if there are problems.

Don't let them even mention IHR.

My mate was told he had cancer and was off sick for well over a year for his treatment,he is now back at work and in good health,the union even got him back his holidays and he didn't even get a stage warning,so hopefully this will ease your mind and allow you to fight this disease,good luck my friend,I wish you well.

If it is any worth sometimes work will take your mind off it but every day is different I just hope your managers can give support and leave you too make the call when you are fit and not fit to work.
